QUICKIE
A picnic outing
A couple who have five sons went for a picnic; each of the sons has seven sisters, and each sister has three babies. In total, how many people went for the picnic?
The couple make up 2 people. Add 5 sons and you have 7 people. If each of the sons has 7 sisters, that’s still only 7 more people (not 5 x 7), so that’s 14 so far. And there are 21 babies, which makes a total of 35. However, nowhere in the question did it state directly that any of the sons, daughters or grandchildren went along to the picnic too, so a more technically correct answer is 2 – only the couple went for the picnic.
