Party ideas for children in Singapore

Gone are the days when you’d troop down to the golden arches with your brood and spend the afternoon doling out happy meals and taking photographs of them next to a life-sized, plastic Ronald McDonald – who, by the way, scared the living bejeezus out of me.

In Singapore, kids’ parties are a big business, and there are lots of planners here who will help you create an amazing world of fun and fantasy. Here are some of your recommendations.

Art Boot Camp
313 Tanjong Katong Road and
200 Turf Club Road #01-23A Turf City
(+65) 6346 1110 or +(65) 6469 5525

When Australian mum Sue Ten threw a birthday party for four-year-old Zara, she enlisted the help of Art Boot Camp.

Zara’s party was the first that Lincoln from Art Boot Camp had arranged in a venue other than his studio, and it was wonderful.

We had it in the function room in our condo, which is usually quite dull, but Lincoln and his team did a fantastic job of decorating the walls in an African jungle and animal theme (Zara’s favourite). They even created an entrance walkway with trees on either side.

They kept the children engaged with art and craft stations, and everything that the children made went into a party bag for them to take home.

Zara has been going to Art Boot Camp weekly for about three years and it is the only activity that keeps her engaged and enthralled.

Bouncy Castles & A Whole Lot More
(+65) 6465 6006

Indian mum Rachna Amin has two daughters, two-year-old Ruhi and one-year-old Sama. Bouncy Castles has helped with all three of their birthday parties.

The parties were a combined effort between Louise from Bouncy Castles and me. While I wanted to utilise her expertise in some areas, I really wanted the flexibility of adding my own personal touches too. So I sourced the locations – one of which was at the beautiful Fort Canning Park – and provided the catering, while she gave us wonderful bouncy castles, balloons and other fun play equipment.

Everything she provided gelled perfectly with our chosen themes, two of which have been “the circus” and “animals”.

I never had to chase Louise to do anything, and during the party she didn’t sound the alarm when our agreed time was up – she just let the kids go on enjoying themselves. I will definitely be asking her to help me organise future parties.

White Lodge Kindergarten
75E Loewen Road

As a special treat for her son’s third birthday, Australian mum Julia Selleck asked Lachlan’s favourite teacher to help her create a party to remember.

Lachlan absolutely adored Miss Sandra, who was his teacher at White Lodge on Linden Drive. When I discovered that the school hosted birthday parties for the students at Loewen Gardens – and I would get to choose the teacher to organise it – I immediately asked for Miss Sandra.

The party was brilliant for young children. Miss Sandra and some of the other teachers kept them all amused with various games, and I had hired a bubble machine and a balloon artist to keep them entertained.

Loewen is a great venue because it is a gated enclosure where parents feel safe leaving their children to play, while they have coffee at The Pantry next door.

Mr Bottle’s Kids Party
61 Teban Gardens Road
#02-03 Teban Place
(+65) 6561 7482

Catherine Ogilvie from Australia stumbled across Mr Bottle while searching for an entertainer for her daughter Emma’s second birthday party.

I found Mr Bottle while doing a Google search, and from the list of entertainers I chose a balloon sculpture specialist. We held a party at our apartment for six or seven children aged between two and five, and he was fantastic. The children loved him.

I think the highlight for Emma was the balloon sculpture of Barney, who was flavour of the month at that time.

I really liked the fact that towards the end of the party, when the children were distracted with other activities, the entertainer did a few magic tricks for the adults. Being in the event business myself, I was very impressed. I would even consider booking him for corporate functions.

Kavanagh Dance
Loewen Gardens
75E Loewen Road
(+65) 9176 5558

Kavanagh Dance School teaches modern jazz, tap, dance-sport, and ballet. It recently relocated to leafy Loewen Gardens. When Charlotte turned nine, she invited her friends to a party at Kavanagh, with lessons in jazz and hip hop. Mum Adele Newman says that her daughter had a wonderful time.

Charlotte says that this was her best party yet. Her friends said that it was fabulous and great fun. They really enjoyed learning the dance steps, and the costumes were a huge hit with everyone.

My husband Mark and I were truly impressed with all the hard work that went into making the party such a success. Everyone at Kavanagh Dance was so helpful.

If you are arranging the catering yourself, these cupcakes from The Pantry are sure to wow the kids – and the grown-ups, too!
