Whether you want to improve communication, increase intimacy or learn to co-parent peacefully, couples therapy can be a very powerful tool. As one of the oldest mental wellness services here, SACAC Counselling has been providing psychotherapy in Singapore to couples, kids, adults and families for over 50 years. It’s safe to say they know a thing or two about helping couples here with their struggles with mental health in Singapore. Here, the team shares the benefits of “talking it out” as a twosome and advice on finding the right professional for your relationship needs.
What is couples therapy?
Couples therapy is a form of psychotherapy that can help partners improve their relationships. There are a wide variety of approaches to couples counselling. Many therapists are trained in more than one modality and can integrate different approaches as needed, depending on the specific challenges a couple is facing.
What types of couples can benefit from psychotherapy and mental health services in Singapore?
Anyone! To be connected and to feel validated is a fundamental human need. Healthy relationships need hard work.
While many couples seek therapy because they have a specific topic or set of issues they want to address, others choose to get counselling to strengthen their relationships even without any specific challenges to work through.
At SACAC Counselling, we work with dating, pre-marital, intercultural and interracial couples, and couples who are transitioning into marriage, parenthood, empty nests or are going through a divorce. Some of the common issues that we help address include the following:
- communication
- infidelity
- conflict resolution
- sexual dysfunction
- infertility struggles
- co-parenting issues
- financial problems
- grief
- adjustment and transitional issues
- anger and emotion regulation
- substance abuse
What mental health approaches do you use for couple counselling?
Our therapists are trained in many different modalities like Gottman Couple Therapy, EFT couple therapy and Satire Couple Therapy. The collective experience of our team is something to be proud of; the therapists also practice other modalities like CBT, ACT, EMDR, IMTT and other trauma-based work to improve mental health in Singapore.
Our highly trained team have all registered with international governing bodies and regularly upgrade their skills in couple work. They are committed to providing a safe space for couples to resolve their differences and also grow together.
What’s your advice for choosing a couples counsellor?
Consider the type of evidence-based approach or approaches the therapist uses and his or her experience working with similar challenges to yours. Selecting the right approach for your relationship can really depend on your goals as a couple.
Personality fit, however, is another major consideration, and you should feel free to select a therapist who speaks your native language. At SACAC Counselling, our multicultural team speaks English, French, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Farsi, Japanese, Malay, Bahasa, Hindi, Cantonese, Hokkien and also Mandarin.
