ThirdHome, a global luxury members-only home exchange club, has turned this idea into a reality – connecting second-home owners to a curated network of high-end homes worldwide. We speak to GILES ADAMS, the company’s Director of Strategy and Operations, to find out how it works, why Southeast Asia is the new hotspot, and what makes this club different from traditional luxury holiday rentals. Plus, read on for ThirdHome reviews!
Giles, what sparked the idea behind ThirdHome?
ThirdHome was founded by Wade Shealy in 2010. Before that, Wade had been selling luxury resort real estate in the US and noticed a pattern: clients would return a few years later, asking him to resell their holiday homes so they could buy elsewhere. But when he dug deeper, he realised they didn’t truly want to sell. What they really wanted was to explore other destinations – yet they felt frustrated having to rent when they already owned a beautiful place. Wade figured many second-home owners were in the same situation, and that insight sparked the idea for ThirdHome.
How exactly does this home exchange club work?
We are an exclusive, high-end property and travel club for owners of luxury second homes. If accepted into the club, your home is uploaded to your online account with beautiful photos, an enticing description, and details of any additional services you offer. Once you’re happy with how your home is presented, you add time for other members to use. In return, you receive credits (we call them “Keys”) that can be used to book any available property.
One of the key benefits of ThirdHome membership is that exchanges are non-simultaneous and non-direct. This means members don’t stay in each other’s homes directly, but instead gain access to explore our vast collection of more than 20,000 properties and experiences.
From beachfront villas in Bali to penthouses in Manhattan and even castles in Europe, the variety is exceptional. And rather than renting, you simply use your Keys and pay a nominal exchange fee of US$495 to $1,995 per stay.
The value proposition is one of our biggest strengths: members pay around 10 percent of the typical rental rate in real terms.
How does ThirdHome differ from other luxury rental or timeshare platforms?
We’re not a rental service or timeshare. Every member is a verified second-home owner, which builds a high-trust community. Members treat each other’s homes as their own, and every property is vetted for quality and luxury standards. Unlike traditional vacation clubs, we don’t charge nightly rates – it’s about sharing time and lifestyle, not commercial rental.
What are some of the top trending destinations within this home exchange club’s portfolio?
Southeast Asia is hot right now! It ticks all the boxes – stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and a rapidly growing luxury real estate market. Our members have been requesting more properties here for years. Thailand, Bali, Singapore, and increasingly Vietnam are in high demand. Plus, luxury branded residences are booming, with nearly a third of new high-end properties in Asia located here. Following our successful expansion into Australia, we’ve seen growing demand for Southeast Asian properties, making this the right time to increase our presence in the region.
Japan’s ski resorts like Niseko and Hokkaido are gaining traction too. Members love the variety – from tropical beaches to alpine retreats and historic European estates.
What’s in it for expats based in Hong Kong or the region?
Membership works really well for expats. Many live in Hong Kong, Singapore or Bangkok, and have second homes in prime Southeast Asian destinations or “back home” in the US, Australia or Europe.
The real benefit of this home exchange club is flexibility. Instead of leaving a home empty, they can use downtime to earn credits and unlock stays at stunning properties worldwide – whether closer to where they live or further afield. For busy professionals, it’s a smart way to maximise the value of a second home, often saving up to 90 percent on luxury rentals compared to hotel rates. Hassle-free, flexible and stylish travel made simple.
How does the home exchange club maintain trust and quality among members?
Each home undergoes a thorough review – from location to design and amenities. After every ThirdHome stay, both host and guest leave reviews, creating accountability. Plus, our dedicated member services team supports members throughout their exchanges, ensuring smooth experiences.
ThirdHome reviews:
“Our first trip to Australia was unforgettable, made even more special by staying in Avalon Beach. Monique was a gracious host, sharing not only a stunning home but also local tips and thoughtful travel advice. The house was beautifully designed with island-inspired details that made us feel instantly at home. But the view stole the show. Watching surfers ride waves from sunrise to sunset was pure magic. Avalon felt priceless, and we know exactly where we’ll stay when we return.” – Matt D, USA, Member since January 2024
“What an amazing stay we had at Chateau Creancey! Our group truly felt as if we were staying in a castle! The location is perfect for exploring Burgundy, Dijon and Beaune and there are so many things to do, a week was hardly enough time. Claire and Hugh were outstanding and responsive hosts and had great information and suggestions for us. This was a trip we will be talking about for years to come!” – Karen S, USA, Member since July 2024
