Ever wonder what’s keeping you from losing those last few kilos or training for that marathon you’ve been talking about for ages? While the motivation might be there and your intentions are good, it’s easy to fall prey to the common pitfalls of setting and effectively sticking to fitness goals past February. It might be time for a change in approach! Here, the UFIT Singapore team shares some helpful strategies you can use to set yourself up for success – and achieve those health goals in 2022. Plus, the UFIT Tiger deal you definitely won’t want to miss!
How to set goals thoughtfully – then smash them!
All too often, we give up on our fitness goals when the going gets tough, or when life gets in the way. From short-on-time excuses to lack-of-experience claims, there’s always a barrier to be found. To get your butt in gear with a game-plan that actually lasts, you’ll need a solid strategy:
#1 Consider the “why”
A good fitness goal is one that’s well thought out with meaning behind it. So, not taking the time to understand the “why” behind your goal could be what’s keeping you from the emotional investment needed for motivation.
For example, if one of your goals for 2022 is to lose weight, ask yourself why you want to lose that weight. If it’s because you want to fit into those jeans again, dig even deeper! Why do you want to fit into those jeans? Is it about overcoming insecurities? Feeling more confident about your appearance? The feeling you’ll get when you prove to yourself that you could get back to you pre-baby body? Whatever the reason may be, figuring out your “why” will make you more emotionally invested in meeting that goal – and more likely to get out of bed in the morning to achieve it.
#2 Acknowledge the obstacles
Once you’ve determined your fitness goals, take a step back and ask yourself, “What are the obstacles that could be keeping me from reaching my goals?” Make a list of any potential challenges that could keep you from achieving what you want.
For instance, if one of your health goals for 2022 is to train for your very first triathlon, but you’re a working mum who’s only run a few kilometres here and there, your list of challenges might look like this:
- “I don’t even know where to start with training”
- “I don’t have enough time to train”
- “I’ve had hardly any experience with running”
- “I should be spending time with my kids instead”
Being honest with yourself and proactively taking the time to identify these concerns up front will put you in a good position to problem-solve. You’ll be able to take the necessary steps to remove those obstacles before you’ve even set out on your mission.
So, if “I don’t have enough time to train” is your issue, take a good look at your schedule and figure out where you can rearrange things to free yourself up for training. If your obstacle is, “I don’t even know where to start with training,” brainstorm some of the different ways you can get the answers you need.
For example, finding a group to train with is a good place to start. UFIT’s Triathlon Squad is a great one that offers both direction and support.
#3 Get some guidance
In fact, getting some guidance from a professional is a great game-plan when it comes to reaching your health and fitness goals. A personal trainer can prove invaluable in helping you achieve your health goals, especially one who you can count on to help you with your diet and other aspects of your wellbeing.
