We might think it’s difficult when our children are newborns, going through teething and colic, but navigating final exams like the IB Diploma or A-Levels with them can be even more tricky! Apart from being as calm and supportive as you can be, how do you help? If stress and anxiety are impacting their learning, it may be wise to call in some outside assistance, a neutral force – or maybe a mental health-trained mentor.
Scholars Hall specialises in navigating situations like this by offering bespoke academic mentorship. Their view is that an exhausted or anxious student cannot absorb complex literary analysis or high-level calculus. By identifying emotional “blocks” or a fear of failure at the start of a session, a mentor ensures that the teaching sinks in. It’s not just about teaching, but also about optimising the student’s ability to receive the information.
Here, we find out more about them and get to know two of the key mentors. And if you think it sounds useful, they’re offering a free 45-minute consultation – details at the end!
Mental health-trained mentors
Trying to teach an overwhelmed IB student is like pouring water onto a saturated sponge. It doesn’t matter how good the water is – if the sponge is already full, the water just runs off the sides and goes to waste.
In this scenario, “drilling” more practice papers is just pouring more water, according to the Scholars Hall mentors. They know how to “wring out” the stress and anxiety first. By checking the student’s headspace and lowering the “saturation” of their stress, they create the physical and mental capacity for the lesson to actually be absorbed, rather than just bouncing off.
One-on-one personalised learning plan
The key is a custom-made learning roadmap instead of a “one-size-fits-all” class. Most tuition centres cater to large groups where everyone learns at the same speed. Scholars Hall describes its approach as more like a private guide. They look at exactly what a student is struggling with and build a specific plan just for them. It replaces generic worksheets with a game plan that focuses only on the areas where that specific student needs to improve.
IB/MOE-aligned pedagogy
“Pedagogy” is a synonym for “how we teach”. So, everything the student learns through Scholars Hall aligns perfectly with their actual school requirements. Whether they’re in the IB system or the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) system, the lessons match the specific style, topics and exam methods they will face in their real tests.
Meet the Mentors
Claire Chee, English Mentor
Claire has a unique approach to mentorship and English tutoring. From firsthand experience, she understands what you can go through to even just start a 4,000-word essay. So much is helping students beat the “blank page” syndrome and start creating.
Using one-on-one sessions and personalised learning, Claire focuses on being a collaborative sounding board so that students feel like she is on their team. It helps them to build their critical thinking skills and creative resilience in a pressure-free environment. “When we allow them to direct their learning and material around their unique personalities, the tone shifts,” she says. “They want to tell you something. And that’s where writing begins.”
Ng Cai Jun, Maths Mentor
Does your child struggle more on the maths side? When it comes to STEM, Cai Jun looks at what he calls the “emotional baseline”. He focuses on calming the panic that often follows a poor mathematics grade by replacing repetitive drilling with a personalised roadmap. His approach bridges the gap between IB and MOE-aligned pedagogy and mental health resilience.
“Mathematics is often taught as ‘blind steps’ to follow,” says Cai Jun. “But to me, it’s about seeing the pattern. I want students to stop looking at a difficult calculus problem as a hurdle and start seeing it as a system they can engineer.”
He operates on the belief that the best way to learn is to understand the mechanism behind the method. By moving students beyond rote memorisation and into “structural thinking”, he uses his background to demystify complex probability and calculus topics found in the A-Level syllabus. He ensures that students understand why a formula works, enabling them to reconstruct solutions rather than simply memorising them.
