Trying to figure out where to get cupcakes for your little one’s birthday? Don’t worry! The Review Crew has you covered. This time we went to the real experts: kids! That’s right… our cupcake tasting team was made up of five kids, sampling one chocolate, one vanilla and one special flavour from five different locations. Here are the yummy results!
#1. Fluff, 4 Jalan Pisang, $52.90/dozen
These halal cupcakes don’t come in your everyday flavours; we tried Nutella Red Velvet, Boston Cream Pie and Speculoos S’Mores, the latter being quite popular with all the kids. Who can go wrong with marshmallow, right? Flavours change weekly and most have a filling inside.
#2. Plain Vanilla, Several locations, $48/dozen
There’s nothing plain about these delicious, incredibly moist cupcakes. Vanilla Bean, Cookies & Cream and Cinnamon Sugar all got very high marks from each crew member, with both the cake and frosting winning big smiles all around. The Cinnamon Sugar is definitely worth hunting down at the outlet closest to you.
#3. Swirls, 8 Rodyk Street, $46.95/dozen
These cupcakes were super cute and why not? The shop has all sorts of readymade toppers you can add. Out of the 101 flavours on offer, we tried Milk Chocolate (with M&Ms on top), Very Vanilla and Strawberry Burst. They were all a bit dry, but tasty and the frosting got a big thumbs-up.
#4. The Frosted Chick, 194 Kim Keat Avenue, $36/dozen
Located in the heart of an HDB, this cute shop had traditional flavours kids should like, like Oreo, Red Velvet and Rainbow Vanilla. The cakes were all pretty dry and not hugely popular, though one reviewer said this place was his fave.
#5. Twelve Cupcakes, Multiple locations, $36/dozen
You’ve probably seen these outlets in just about every mall in Singapore. We tasted Rainbow Vanilla, Chocolate Chocolate and Cookies & Cream. The cakes were a bit crumbly and one reviewer said they were “nothing special”, though if you’re in a mall and want a quick fix, these treats will do nicely.
One of the girls on the team started out saying she wanted to be a cupcake reviewer when she grew up. However, by the fifteenth bite, she realised reviewing sweets isn’t the easiest gig. Still, all the kids had lots of fun and went home totally sugared up. Want to be on our next Review Crew? Email contribute@expatliving.sg!
