We scour the bar scene to bring you the new and noteworthy – cool new bars and nightspots for you to try. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!
Housed in a heritage shophouse with an identical front door to the iconic home of the British Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, The Monarchy is the brainchild of nightlife veterans Robbie Hoyes-Cock, CEO and founder of the internationally glamorous Formula 1 weekend after-party The Podium Lounge, and Steve Yallop, former Executive Director of Pangaea at Marina Bay Sands, who have been organising high- society events in Singapore since 2005.
Choose a booth seat or sit at the bar admiring the mixologists – smartly dressed by Kevin Seah Bespoke – whipping up truly British cocktails, and enjoy the luxurious surrounds of commissioned artworks of British monarchs and icons from American celebrity artist Alex Wakefield; all the paintings are also for sale.
The Chosen One:
The opening cocktail list (it changes quarterly) by GM Rob Scott offers a wonderful twist on famous cocktails and follows “Cool Britannia”, the 1990s celebration of youth culture in the UK. There are 18 “proper” cocktails to choose from, and all are named after British songs throughout the ages – Bitter Sweet Symphony and Yellow Submarine, to name a couple. We particularly loved Message in a Bottle ($23) – fruity and smooth with scotch whisky,
Dubonnet, sweet vermouth, orange liqueur and maraschino – Parklife ($23), which was floral and refreshing with gin, apple, elderflower, lemon and soda, and Champagne Supernova ($21) – sparkling, fruity and light with Pimm’s, watermelon, lemon, cucumber, mint, ginger and champagne. The drinks are all Insta-worthy, right up to the ice cubes stamped with “The Monarchy”. Of course, there’s also an extensive drinks list for those non-cocktail drinkers.
Last but not least:
The cocktail bar is open Tuesday toSaturdays from 6pm. From 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights (and evenings of public holidays), a secret door opens to reveal the venue’s swanky special lounge. Featuring big-name international DJs and live acts, The Monarchy Cocktail Bar & Ultra Lounge is a permanent spiritual home for the venue’s glamorous “Monarchy nights”. The space has seven Chesterfield VIP tables named after British icons: The Helen Mirren, The George Michael, The Amy Winehouse, The John Lennon, The Hugh Grant, The Audrey Hepburn and, the regally appointed VVIP Table, The Winston Churchill. Each table even comes with a dedicated VIP hostess! Private parties and VIP tables can be booked via firstname.lastname@example.org.
