We get to know STEVEN LUPTON, the new Head of School at Australian International School. Moving to Singapore with his wife and two sons, Steven brings over 20 years of experience in education across Australia, the UK and the UAE. He tells us what he’s looking forward to in his new role and being a part of the AIS community.
Where are you from originally? What do you miss about it?
I was born in Nelson Bay and grew up in New South Wales, Australia. I miss the beaches, and the simplicity of growing up surrounded by nature.
What brought you to Singapore, and where had you been living prior to this?
I’m taking up the role of the new Head of School at AIS. Prior to this, my family and I were living in Abu Dhabi, where I spent nearly a decade leading Repton Abu Dhabi. Singapore felt like the right next chapter, both professionally and for our family, as it’s a global city with a strong sense of community and opportunity.
Tell us a bit about your role as the new Head at AIS.
At its core, my role is about people. I bring a strong belief that great schools are built on trust, relationships and high expectations paired with genuine care.
Families can expect a continued focus on academic excellence, further developing outstanding teaching, and a school culture where children are known, supported and encouraged to grow in confidence and character.
2026 will be about building on the school’s strong foundations and ensuring students are well prepared not just for exams, but for life beyond school.
What does a typical working day at AIS look like for you?
No two days are the same, which I love. My day usually starts early, as I prefer to exercise in the morning.
Typically, I start my work day walking the campus, greeting students, talking with staff and being visible. From there, it’s a mix of meetings that could involve academic progress, strategic planning or school improvement planning. I try to finish each day connecting with students and families as they leave campus.
What are a few things you like to do when you’re not working?
My two sons, Harvey (11) and Louis (9) are very active and involved in lots of sports. Sport has always been a big part of my life, so I enjoy staying active together with them, getting to the gym, cycling and swimming.
I have a passion for travelling with my family, discovering new places, good food, good coffee, good conversation and spending time outdoors.
What are you looking forward to most for 2026?
One, settling into Singapore with my family.
Secondly, becoming part of the AIS community. Getting to know the students, staff and families. Listening, learning and shaping the next chapter together with my team. There’s something special about joining a school with a strong identity and shared values, and I’m excited to contribute to that journey.
The Australian International School is at 1 Lorong Chuan.
