When I attended the recent relaunch of White Ginger Singapore in Tanglin Mall, I loved the fabulous renovated space, the new collection of easy breezy resort wear and the fresh collaboration with Bowerbird Ceramics. Needless to say, I didn’t go home empty-handed! Creative Director EMMA FEMMINILE shares what’s new in-store, including handmade gifts, vases in Singapore and more!
Tell us more about the refurbished space.
We’re delighted to showcase our new flagship store White Ginger Singapore in Tanglin Mall that’s recently undergone a top-to-toe facelift. In line with the rest of the mall, our store has a wider frontage and a more welcoming feel. Also, our slick new stockroom means website orders are dispatched swiftly, and the extra space means we can hold more stock, so it’s easier to serve customers better.
Tanglin Mall has certainly been busy in recent weeks, reflecting the fabulous choice of shops and restaurants now available. I love Little Farms for lunch, and our neighbours next door at A Raft of Otters have a lovely array of unusual gifts.
White Ginger now carries vases and bowls from Bowerbird Ceramics. How did this come about?
Bowerbird Ceramics is a brand of gorgeous hand-painted vases and bowls made in Vietnam. We’re thrilled to stock the brand at White Ginger, so customers can now purchase these vases in Singapore. The owner Lisa is a dear old friend from when our children were at school together – so it’s wonderful to be stocking the vases which sit beautifully with our own homeware. It helps that we share the same passions – the main one is sipping a glass of chardonnay in Paris! These vases in Singapore are popular for their designs.
Repatriating to London and opening a store there, have you noticed a European influence in your designs?
White Ginger is proving very popular in the UK. I always underestimate the demand! I sometimes tailor designs of women’s dresses to suit the cooler climate by using thicker fabrics and elongating sleeves so that styles can transcend seasons. European style used to be more formal and neutral but in the wake of COVID everyone is geared towards “dopamine dressing” and having fun with clothes – so the White Ginger classics of bright geometric prints have been a big hit. Our Spring/Summer 2023 collection is full of zesty greens and more cheerful pinks.
Tell us about your new handmade gift collection.
I’m so excited to launch the handmade gift collection, which is made entirely by women from our dedicated charity Bali Life. Having spent time at the women’s centre in Denpasar, we’ve designed products together that are currently being made, to launch (hopefully!) over Chinese New Year.
The range of handmade gifts is playfully called “Fluffle”, which is the name for a group of rabbits. As 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit, bunnies definitely feature! Hand-sewn by women at the centre, the range includes key rings, teddy bears and more. One hundred per cent of the proceeds are reinvested to buy more raw materials for their products. It’s a wonderful centre where underprivileged women are taught skills and can earn a wage, while their children are educated in a classroom.
