Secrets of Asia’s Wildlife
Sir David Attenborough’s newest documentary Asia is a seven-part series exploring the planet’s largest and richest continent. This is the first BBC Earth wildlife series focused on this continent. Filmed over nearly four years, it reveals Asia’s remarkable landscapes, animals and dramatic, previously unseen behaviours. The continent’s breathtaking diversity is showcased from the vast Gobi Desert to Borneo’s jungles, Siberia’s polar wilderness and the coral seas of the Indian Ocean. The series also explores how animals coexist with humans in cities in Japan, Thailand and India. Catch it on BBC Player.

Chingay for UNESCO
Malaysia and Singapore are collaborating to nominate Chingay – a street parade celebrating multiculturalism, traditions and artistic expression – for inclusion on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This marks Singapore’s third UNESCO nomination and commemorates 60 years of bilateral ties between the two nations. Practised actively in Singapore, Penang and Johor Bahru, Chingay embodies shared heritage and fosters cultural connections. The nomination will be submitted in March 2025, with results expected by late 2026.
Coming Up for SAS
Singapore American School will open its new elementary school building in the first quarter of 2025. The milestone is part of the SAS Reimagined campus upgrade project, shaped by extensive research and collaboration with the school’s community. A non-profit institution with a legacy of over 68 years, SAS offers education from Preschool to Grade 12 on its 36-acre campus. The school says that its 400-plus full-time faculty members – 80 percent of whom have a Master’s or PhD degree – “foster innovation and personalised learning by empowering every student to develop and soar”.
Arts Accolades
Six artists have been conferred prestigious awards for their outstanding contributions to Singapore’s arts sector. Ghanavenothan Retnam and Siew Hock Meng received the 2024 Cultural Medallion for their distinctive contributions to the Indian classical music scene and the visual arts respectively. Alan Choo, Evan Low, Tan Si En and Zhang Fuming received the Young Artist Award for showcasing diversity in their work that resonates with audiences in contemporary Singapore. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam presented the accolades at a ceremony held at The National Gallery Singapore in November 2024.
Rhymes on Your Ride!
Until 30 October this year, MRT trains on the East-West, North-South and Circle lines will become moving literary showcases of 100 local poems in English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. The multilingual literary experience that celebrates the city’s cultural diversity also includes a concept train that’s dressed in an eye-catching train wrap, and, in the trains and stations, animated videos created by local artists and video interviews with the poets sharing their inspirations. Full access to poems and their translations are available by scanning QR codes on the trains.
