Not a fan of getting your teeth professionally cleaned? If you tend to put it off because of the discomfort, here is a newer teeth cleaning method you might want to know about. Combining airflow technology with guided biofilm therapy (GBT), this approach promises gentler, more effective dental cleaning – especially for those with sensitive teeth. Here, DR PHILLIP MILLER from Dental Designs Clinic shares his insights on why more patients are choosing it over traditional cleaning.

Why should we go for professional teeth cleaning? And how often?
Professional teeth cleaning does far more than improve the look of your teeth. It’s essential for long-term oral health. Even with diligent brushing and flossing, plaque and biofilm can accumulate in hard-to-reach areas. If left unchecked, this can lead to:
- Gum inflammation and early stages of gum disease
- Persistent bad breath caused by bacteria
- Staining from coffee, tea, wine and food
- Increased risk of cavities and tooth decay
Cleaning every six months helps prevent dental problems before they start. Regular professional care allows us to preserve your natural teeth, maintain healthy gums and keep your smile confident and stable. At Dental Designs Clinic, patients can also make use of insurance coverage. We partner with major insurers to make dental care stress-free, convenient and affordable.
Tell us about this new teeth cleaning technology – Airflow cleaning with GBT. How does it work?
Airflow and guided biofilm therapy (GBT) take professional teeth cleaning to a new level of precision and comfort. Using a gentle, warm water spray combined with fine powder, these treatments remove plaque, biofilm and stubborn stains, even in areas that brushing and flossing alone can’t reach.
GBT uses a disclosing dye to reveal biofilm, a soft, sticky layer of bacteria that can lead to cavities and gum disease if not removed. We then target these areas with the Airflow device, thoroughly cleaning your teeth without damaging enamel.

I have found that patients particularly appreciate GBT for several reasons. The treatment is gentle and ideal for sensitive teeth, using fine powder that glides over enamel without harsh vibrations or metal scraping, making it suitable even for those with receding gums.
The procedure is performed using the EMS Airflow Prophylaxis Master. It’s an innovative device from Switzerland designed for patient comfort, thorough biofilm removal and efficiency. This method avoids the manual force and scraping associated with traditional metal instruments, which can be abrasive to enamel and gums. Not to mention, the erythritol powder is hypoallergenic, making it safe for use around fillings, crowns, veneers, orthodontic brackets and dental implants, without scratching or damaging the surfaces.
The sessions are quick, precise and comfortable, typically taking 40 to 50 minutes. Many patients describe the experience as more “spa-like” than clinical!
Is this teeth cleaning treatment safe for kids?
Teeth cleaning is important for all ages – and yes, Airflow cleaning is safe for children. What’s more, our multilingual team (English, Mandarin, Russian, Cantonese, Japanese, Malay, Tamil) will ensure that every question you have is answered clearly.
Our internationally trained dentists bring global expertise with personalised care, making the experience stress-free for little ones and adults alike. We have patient-focused amenities like comfortable seating, cosy blankets and ceiling-mounted TVs. Our clinic also has a playful kids’ corner to make visits enjoyable for younger patients.

I have sensitive teeth and am nervous about that sharp, zinging pain that comes with dental cleaning. How painful is Airflow teeth cleaning?
Fear of pain is one of the main reasons people avoid dental visits. This is why Dental Designs Clinic places a strong emphasis on comfort and reassurance. For those who feel nervous, laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is available to help patients remain fully conscious while feeling relaxed and calm during routine procedures.
Airflow cleaning is designed to be a comfortable dental cleaning treatment for sensitive teeth. It uses a gentle spray of water, air and fine powder to remove plaque, biofilm and surface stains. A dental protector shields the lips from any spraying, and high-vacuum suction efficiently removes all particles, ensuring a clean, smooth and comfortable treatment from start to finish.
Can you walk us through an Airflow and GBT teeth cleaning session?
Yes, a typical session includes:
- Assessment: A dental professional evaluates your oral health and identifies areas needing attention.
- Disclosing (GBT): A safe dye highlights invisible biofilm, revealing pink or purple areas where plaque has built up. This ensures the cleaning is precise and thorough.
- Airflow cleaning: Gentle removal of biofilm and surface stains using warm water and fine powder, leaving teeth smooth and refreshed.
- Scaling (if needed): Any remaining hardened tartar (calculus) is carefully removed with an ultrasonic scaler.
- Final check and fluoride: The dentist ensures all deposits are cleared and may apply a fluoride treatment for extra protection and enamel strength.
