If you’ve ever been to Germany in spring, you’ll know: white asparagus season is a big deal. Restaurants roll out special menus, farmers’ markets overflow with thick, pale spears, and locals tuck into the beloved “White Gold”. But what’s all the fuss about this German food? You can find out for yourself at Brotzeit, Singapore’s authentic Bavarian restaurant, during Spargel Wochen – an annual German festival centred on white asparagus – running from 2 April to 15 June.
For just a few weeks each year, this rare, tender vegetable makes its way onto plates, served the way Germans love it: with buttery potatoes, rich hollandaise sauce and perfectly paired meats.
What makes this German food so special?
Unlike its green counterpart, white asparagus is grown underground, never seeing the sun. This keeps it pale and gives it a milder, slightly sweet flavour without the bitterness of green asparagus. It’s a labour-intensive crop, which is why it’s such a celebrated seasonal delicacy in Germany.
And while it might not get as much hype in Singapore, foodies shouldn’t miss the chance to experience a true springtime tradition. At Brotzeit, you can try it in classic pairings or go all out with the Spargel Frühlings Platte ($98), a sharing feast featuring white asparagus, bratwurst, pork schnitzel and black forest ham.
Brotzeit’s White Asparagus Weekend Brunch
If a long, laid-back brunch is your style, Brotzeit’s White Asparagus (Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays) is the way to go. For $49, enjoy a free-flow selection of asparagus-inspired dishes. Add unlimited beverages – including prosecco, Aperol spritz and draught beers – for $58, because nothing says ‘spring celebration’ like a drink in hand.
Where to get your white asparagus fix!
Not all Brotzeit locations will have the full menu, so make sure to visit VivoCity, Raffles City, East Coast or Westgate for the full experience. The new Stanley Street outlet will have a limited white asparagus selection but will still bring Brotzeit’s signature Bavarian hospitality.
