Life as an expat can feel transitory if you don’t invest the time and energy to make your house feel like a home. This is a story that long-term Australian expat MIRANDA KOZAN knows so well that she’s turned her passion and knack for creating stunning spaces into a thriving business. We sit down with her to uncover how she brings magic to homes across Singapore and beyond through her interior design services, Interior Couturier.
How did you come to find yourself in Singapore as an interior designer?
I’m originally from Australia and have spent the last 20 years living abroad, with 12 of those in Singapore, where I now run my boutique interior design studio, Interior Couturier. Having lived far from my roots for a long time, I know how important it is to create a home that feels personal. That’s exactly what I help expats do – transforming houses into spaces that tell their unique stories.
Before transitioning to interiors in 2008 while living in London, I worked as a furniture designer in Australia. That experience gave me a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and detail, which continues to shape my work today. Whether it’s a bespoke piece or an entire home, I bring the same love for quality and timeless design to every project. My international experiences have shaped my ability to blend aesthetics with practicality – an approach that’s at the heart of everything I do.
What kind of interior design services do you offer clients?
I offer full-service interior design, from renovations to final touches like styling and decoration. Whether redesigning a space, creating a new kitchen, or selecting the perfect furniture, I handle all the details. I believe homes should nurture wellbeing, which is why I focus on fostering a connection to sustainability. From selecting low-tox materials to incorporating thoughtful design solutions, I create homes that not only look beautiful but also feel good to live in.
While I primarily work with clients in Singapore, I also assist them in designing second homes in Australia or the UK, creating a “home away from home” that reflects their unique identity, no matter where they currently live. My goal is to make the process seamless, so clients can focus on what matters most: loving their home.
Do you have a signature style or look?
I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all design. Every project is different because it’s all about the client – how they live, what they love, and how they want to feel in their space. That said, my designs tend to have a certain refinement, balancing scale, proportion and simplicity with just the right touch of elegance. It’s more about creating a timeless look that feels authentic to the people who live there.
What questions do you typically ask a client before getting to work?
Getting to know my clients is one of the best parts of the process. I always start by asking how they want their home to feel – cosy, energising, serene? Then we get into their day-to-day life: Who uses the space? What’s working, and what isn’t? I also love learning about their personal style, favourite colours, and even the places or memories that inspire them.
Budget is another key topic we address from the outset. We don’t shy away from discussing it openly, as it’s an essential part of the process. A budget includes our design fees, materials, labour, and the furniture and products that will bring the project to life. Having a clear understanding of the budget helps us tailor the design to suit not just the home but also the client’s priorities, ensuring a seamless and thoughtful result.
What do you love most about your interior design services?
The moment when my clients see their finished space for the first time. It’s incredibly rewarding to know I’ve created a home where they can relax, entertain or simply be themselves. Each project brings its own challenges and creative opportunities, and I thrive on that variety. Plus, I’m constantly inspired by my clients – they all bring something unique to the table.
What inspires you when designing a new space?
Inspiration comes from so many places: my clients’ stories, their art collections, and even their favourite holiday destinations. Travel is a big one for me – I love weaving in subtle nods to a client’s heritage or a place they love. It’s about creating a home that tells their story.
Interior design tips
Miranda’s four key things to consider for anyone wanting to kick-start redecorating their home:
#1 Think about how you want to feel: Before you start, reflect on the feeling you want in each room. It’s a great way to guide your choices.
#2 Go bold on scale: Don’t be afraid of oversized furniture, rugs or lighting. Larger pieces can make a space feel more cohesive.
#3 Hang your art: Artwork can completely transform a room, but so many people do without, or hang a piece too high. Get it on the wall at eye level and you’ll see the difference.
#4 Get on top of storage and clutter: Stylish storage solutions keep your space looking polished while staying functional.
