Living in Singapore, we are surrounded by fabulous beach destinations, many of which are only an hour or two away. Each of the six special locations featured here has the beach as well as something extra to make your getaway memorable.
Who? Sri Villas
What? Three spacious villas that can be rented individually or together, to accommodate up to 20 guests.
Where? Bentota Beach on the west coast of Sri Lanka. Only a ten-minute drive from the famous resort of Bentota.
Why? This is one of Sri Lanka’s best venues for entertaining large groups. Each villa is self-contained, giving individuals or family units their own privacy. but the shared spaces, including the large tropical garden and pool, provide a focus for communal activities.
There are genuine smiles from the helpful efficient staff, who are experienced in dealing with the individual needs of guests. One staff member is assigned to each villa for continuity and ease.
Great food with lots of choice is available at all times. Fresh juices in the fridge allow you to help yourself. Prepare your own meals in your villa’s kitchen, or delight in the wonderful cooking of the staff. You can either pay your food bills via a grocery system, where the staff does the shopping for you, or pay a daily full-board fee.
What else? A little gate at the front of Sri Villas leads onto a wide, golden beach that it mostly deserted except for the odd fisherman, the occasional turtle and a scattering of strollers at sunset. Swimming and body-boarding is good during the November to April season, and the lap pool is always inviting.

Why? It’s the perfect place for an extended family gathering – a wedding, a special anniversary or a birthday. Jagaditha can cater to large groups in style. Perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean, there is really no reason to leave the villa; stay put, relax and enjoy time with friends or relatives.
The six-bedroom villa is based on the traditional Balinese layout, with each bedroom and ensuite bathroom in a separate bungalow. There’s a large lawn for croquet, cricket and kite-flying; numerous living areas and private verandahs for chilling out and a sunset pavilion perfect for massages and cocktails. The staff includes a talented chef who can shop for you and whip up a feast.

Who? Bali Dream Villas – Kakatua and Kedidi
What? Two villas that can be hired either separately or together, to accommodate up to 14 guests.
Where? Canggu Beach, on Bali’s west coast, known for stunning sunsets and tranquillity.
Why? As well as offering all the features you’d expect in a villa, Kakatua and Kedidi are located close to many of the cultural experiences Bali offers. A car and driver are included with the villa, so why not get out and explore?
How about a morning’s surfing or boogie-board lessons, followed by lunch and a snooze, and then stake your claim for seats at the iconic Tanah Lot Temple. From there, you can watch the sunset and a traditional Balinese kechak dance. After that, return to the villa – it’s only a 20-minute drive away – for a meal prepared by the villa’s superb chef.
Adults might enjoy a round at the renowned Nirwana Bali Golf Club, and take the opportunity to sample Legian and Seminyak’s many restaurants.
Younger kids can try mini-golf or spend hours building sandcastles. The bigger kids will love horse-riding along the beach or through verdant rice fields, and kids of all ages will enjoy kite-flying and exploring the rock pools and combing the beach for shells.
What else? Did we mention shopping? A mind-boggling assortment of shops selling just about everything for everyone will satisfy shopaholics.
What? Resort located on Batu Ferringhi beach.
Where? Penang, an island off the west coast of peninsular Malaysia.
Why? A perennial favourite, this 30-year-old resort was totally refurbished last year and is an ideal place for families with active children. If you have an early or a late flight, you can relax in the new Club Cool transit lounge – a wonderful facility, especially for sleepy or cranky kids.
Another big plus is the Adventure Zone, a huge, air-conditioned entertainment centre that will appeal to kids of all ages. They might not even make it to the beach, with play options including three different slides, a game zone, a toddler area, party rooms and a kids’ club.
The beach is the setting for water activities such as wakeboarding, parasailing, canoeing and banana-boat rides. Boat excursions to nearby isles, jet-ski excursions and sunset cruises – who says holidays are for relaxing?
What else? Visit the capital Georgetown, a Unesco World Heritage site just 20 minutes away. The Butterfly Farm is close by and the excellent Spice Farm is also worth visiting.

What? A resort set in stunning Phang Nga, Thailand
Where? Khao Lak is located 83 km north of Phuket International Airport.
Why? Set on the beautiful, 13-kilometre long Pakwib Beach and surrounded by Phang Nga Bay, the area is famed for its natural attractions, including national parks with tropical rainforests, soaring cliffs, caves and cascading waterfalls.
Choose from villas, suites and hotel rooms. Khao Lak offers a unique experience and the opportunity to do as little or as much as you like, and has six restaurants with international cuisine. Children are not forgotten; each venue has a special menu for the kids.
This is a destination for both families and couples, and will especially appeal to nature lovers and divers. After a day of action-packed adventure, you can unwind and be indulged at Le Spa.
What else? Similan National Park for off and onshore adventures: diving with angel fish and manta rays or exploring dense rainforest and dazzling beaches.
