Germany-based MEGAN STONE created Ribbon Route to take the stress out of long-distance gifting. She shares her story and how she’s helping clients from Singapore (and anywhere in the world) send beautifully personalised gifts to loved ones in Europe.
What made you decide to create Ribbon Route?
After moving to Germany from the UK, I realised how much you have to learn to celebrate from a distance – something I found really difficult. I often missed those special moments or celebrations, big and small, when I would normally have been there in person. Sending a gift became my way of showing up from afar, but it never felt as personal as I wanted.
When my best friend’s baby turned one, I wanted to send several gifts and a card, but sending them myself meant expensive international shipping, customs and uncertainty around when everything would arrive. Instead, I ordered directly from different retailers. The gifts arrived separately, she didn’t know which parcels were from me until I told her, and there was little element of surprise as she could see where everything came from and how much I had spent.
That experience inspired Ribbon Route. I wanted long-distance gifting to feel personal again, without the complications of sending gifts internationally. That means gifts sourced locally, brought together, beautifully wrapped and delivered as one thoughtful gift rather than a collection of parcels.
Walk us through the experience of using this personalised gifting platform; what can we expect?
It starts with you choosing the gift. Shop online as you normally would, from any retailer, and send us the website links through the order form on ribbon-route.com. You can tell us who the gift is for, choose your wrapping paper and ribbon, add a hand-painted watercolour card with your message, and provide the recipient’s delivery details. Currently, Ribbon Route delivers to recipients across the European Union.
Once submitted, we check whether your gifts can be sourced locally to help avoid international shipping, customs and unpredictable delivery times. Within 24 hours, you’ll receive an invoice with a secure payment link. Once paid, we order everything to Ribbon Route in Germany, bring it together, beautifully wrap it and add your personal touches before sending it to your recipient.
We keep you updated throughout, including a photo of your finished personalised gift before it leaves us. You can also provide your WhatsApp number if you’d prefer to chat with us directly.
What’s been the most rewarding part of building Ribbon Route so far?
The most rewarding part is knowing that I’m helping families, friends and partners feel closer to the people they love, even from a distance. I know first-hand how difficult it can be to watch someone you love celebrate through a phone screen when you wish you could be there.
One of our customers was an 82-year-old grandmother in South Africa who used Ribbon Route to send a Pandora charm to her granddaughter in France when she started at her new international school. She told me how much it meant to be able to send her something special when she couldn’t be there in person.
Being able to create that feeling of connection for people, wherever they are in the world, is the most rewarding part of building Ribbon Route.
How has living abroad shaped the way you think about staying connected with the people you love?
I’ve lived abroad for over two years now and, honestly, I am still growing and learning how to love people from a distance. I find it strange how often I worry that the distance will weaken the connections with the people who matter most to me.
What I’ve learnt is that staying close from afar requires intention. Don’t wait for a birthday or special occasion to reach out. Send the photo that reminded you of them, leave a voice note, plan the FaceTime, book the trip home or send a little long-distance gift simply because you were thinking of them.
I’ve also learnt not to measure a relationship by how often you speak. Life gets busy, time zones get in the way and sometimes weeks pass. For me, it’s the small, thoughtful gestures that remind someone, despite the miles between you, that they’re still part of your everyday life and always remain in your thoughts.
With gifting season around the corner, do you have any tips for choosing and personalising a gift for a loved one?
For me, the best gifts come from knowing the little details about someone. Gifting is a way of showing love, care or appreciation. Often it isn’t about how much you spend, but how well the gift reflects the person receiving it.
Think about the things they mention without realising: something they’ve wanted for months, a hobby they love, their favourite brand, a place you’ve visited together or even an inside joke. Those small details can turn something relatively simple into a really thoughtful surprise.
I also think presentation is part of the gift itself. Choosing wrapping in their favourite colour, adding a thoughtful message or including something personal, like a watercolour card of a place or memory you share, can make it feel completely unique to them.
My biggest tip would be not to choose something simply because it’s considered a “good gift”. Choose something that makes the person opening it think, “They really know me.”
