From Ukraine to the little red dot, Olena R., founder of Elena Beaute, chats to us about life as a permanent makeup artist in Singapore – and her next big adventure: setting up her own makeup academy! Find out why she is so passionate about paving the way for others in the beauty industry. Plus, how to learn a beauty tip or two at her upcoming makeup courses in Singapore.
What brought you to Singapore, and where had you been living previously?
I’m from Ukraine and lived there while working as a successful brand manager. However, I reached a point where I felt completely burned out. And so, I decided to make a drastic change in my life. This led me to Singapore, where I unexpectedly chose to pursue an international beauty certification course from CIDESCO (Comité International d’Esthétique et de Cosmétologie).
Tell us a bit about your background and foray into the beauty industry – and eventually permanent makeup.
It started about 10 years ago when I embarked on a journey to discover my passion for this field. I initially started as a beautician and lash maker, but later decided to delve into the art of permanent makeup. This exploration of various beauty fields ultimately led me to establish myself as a permanent makeup artist under the name Elena Beaute.
As an entrepreneur and permanent makeup artist in Singapore, what does a typical work day look like for you?
A typical work day for me begins at 6am with a gym session and meditation. This helps ensure I am centred and energised for the day ahead. By 10am, I am fully prepared to start attending to my clients, and my schedule remains occupied until 6pm.
However, being a beautician in today’s world means that the work never truly stops. In addition to serving clients, I also dedicate time to respond to customer inquiries, manage social media accounts and invest in my professional development by taking courses to enhance my skills and stay up to date with the latest trends and techniques in the beauty industry. It’s a demanding but fulfilling lifestyle that keeps me constantly engaged and motivated.

What inspired you to set up your own permanent makeup academy?
I’m passionate about sharing my expertise and knowledge with aspiring individuals in the beauty industry. As I began to gain a strong reputation in the field of permanent makeup, I realised the importance of providing comprehensive training to those who have a desire to pursue a career in this field.
I was deeply honoured to receive a certification from the International Permanent Makeup Sviato Academy. That further motivated me to create Permanent Makeup Academy Sviato by Elena Beaute. Through this academy, I aim to empower individuals with the necessary skills to excel in the world of permanent makeup, offering them an opportunity for a new and fulfilling career in the beauty industry.
Any particular surprises or challenges you’ve found living and working as a makeup artist in Singapore?
One of the main difficulties I encountered was the intense competition in the beauty and makeup industry. Singapore is home to many talented artists and studios, so standing out and establishing myself was initially a challenge. However, with perseverance, quality work and building strong relationships with clients, I was able to overcome these challenges and establish a loyal client base.
What are a few things you like to do in Singapore when you’re not working?
I enjoy exploring nature parks, immersing myself in cultural experiences, trying new cuisines and experiencing the vibrant nightlife in Singapore! It’s a great way to relax and appreciate the city’s diverse offerings.
