ARCHITA MISHRA shows us around her family’s Meyer Road condo with an amazing sea view. She talks us through renovation and décor decisions, and shares why she thinks Katong is one of the best areas in Singapore to live.
Where are you from originally and when did you move to Singapore?
We’re from India. I moved here from Mumbai in 2007 and my husband Dev relocated from New York in 2011. Together, we have made Singapore our home.
What do you do here?
Our biggest (and most rewarding) job is raising our two kids – they keep us on our toes more than any office ever could! Professionally, I work in banking and Dev works in reinsurance.
Where did you first live when you came to Singapore and why?
We used to live in the Dhoby Ghaut area. At that time, we didn’t have kids, and we liked being able to walk to work and explore the city on foot. This included long walks at Fort Canning Park – and on some occasions we would walk all the way from the Botanic Gardens to our home.
Later, we moved to Meyer Road; it’s been our address for over a decade. We were looking to get our own place, and after scouting across the city, we landed in Aalto; we loved the vibe of the condo, the spacious layout and the proximity to both nature and work.
Tell us a bit about your Meyer Road condo and the Katong neighbourhood.
Our condo has expansive sea views, and we’re very close to East Coast Park. The neighbourhood has a lot of character both in terms of architecture and food, and there’s a great vibe around Joo Chiat Road and Katong.
There’s a mix of expat and local communities here. We have built friendships over the years, and it’s truly heartwarming to see our kids grow up together as friends. There are plenty of fun outdoor activities, and excellent preschools and schools in the area, too.
It’s a four-bedroom unit in the Aalto condominium, approximately 2,000 square feet in size. We get almost a 270-degree view of the East Coast and the city from our apartment.
Our home embraces a nature-inspired and calming aesthetic – simple, uncluttered spaces that flow with natural light and sea views. We have added art pieces that we have collected over the years, mostly happy and whimsical works that bring character and a sense of fun to the serene setting.
Have you done any renovations, rebuilding or makeovers?
The unit we bought had the developer’s original design specifications with considerable wear and tear. We could see potential in remodelling it.
Our aim was to create a sense of a bigger space within the confines of the unit size. This meant a major renovation: we knocked down walls, integrated rooms, made smart use of bay windows and built custom-designed carpentry. For example, we expanded the living room by integrating it with the adjoining study room; we completely redesigned the kitchen, combining the original wet and dry kitchen areas; we also changed the flooring, bathrooms, carpentry and door designs to create a fresh aesthetic.
What have been your best furniture or home décor purchases?
- David Gerstein’s “Synergy”, a vibrant 3D wall sculpture that exemplifies his unique style of combining pop art, street art and contemporary sculpture.
- Pema’s “Prayer flags” painting from Bhutan, reminding us of our time in the mountains of that country.
- Plants from Soilboy; our collection of plants includes a Japanese Everfresh, Pachiras of various sizes and olive trees.
- The travertine coffee table, which is from Originals.
- Woven lounge chairs from Attic Living.
- The Herman Miller Aeron chair for our work-from-home office.
How would you define your home style?
Our home really reflects who we are and what we love. The design style was to bring the outdoors inside. The aesthetic emphasises natural light, a serene colour palette, and organic materials to create a calming and connected to nature atmosphere.
Favourite area in the house and why?
Our favourite part of the house is the living area – it’s where we come together as a family and with friends. We wanted it to be a true conversation space, surrounded by serene views, so we deliberately chose not to have a TV here. With natural light streaming in, an open space for hosting, and music filling the room, it always feels uplifting and full of energy.
What do you like most about living in Singapore?
We love the greenery – the city feels like a big island garden. We appreciate the sense of safety, rich multiculturalism and how efficiently everything works. Overall, it’s a great place for families and to raise kids.
Got any advice for newcomers?
The weather in Singapore takes some getting used to – just give yourself time and you will fall in love with the city!
