It’s not uncommon to flinch a little at the mention of “extraction facials”. After all, the idea of having your clogged pores and blackheads manually removed is a bit scary! However, this specialised facial has not only gained a legion of fans over the years but also proven ultra-effective in ridding stubborn impurities to achieve much smoother, healthier skin. Plus, as we found out from the team at Holland V beauty salon SG Face, which has specialised in manual extraction facials in Singapore for over a decade, the discomfort is manageable when done correctly. Read on for five things to know about extraction facials – plus our review!
#1 Extraction facials set the stage for healthy skin
Extraction facials act as a foundational step – akin to creating a clean canvas for subsequent skin treatments. By removing blackheads, whiteheads and other pore congestion, the facial then provides a clear and receptive surface. This allows skincare treatments to penetrate more effectively, maximising their benefits and ensuring optimal results. By promoting skin clarity and reducing pore blockages, extraction facials can also help to maintain a healthy complexion over time.
#2 Extraction facials are great for blackhead removal and clogged pores
Extraction facials are great for a wide range of skin conditions for most men and women, except those with hypersensitive skin. They target common issues such as acne, clogged pores, uneven texture, dullness, excess sebum production and skin congestion. By thoroughly removing blackheads, dead skin cells and oily build-up, extraction facials can rejuvenate the skin to give a clearer, smoother and more radiant complexion.
It’s important to note that nearly everyone experiences some level of gunk and debris build-up in their skin over time. So, extraction facials are a beneficial treatment for maintaining overall skin health for most.
#3 It’s important to find a trusted beauty salon
SG Face’s extraction facials stand out due to the team’s almost 20 years of industry experience, since the 1990s. They say that they prioritise professionalism by meticulously training each therapist in-house with their manual blackhead removal methods, ensuring thorough and effective results. Additionally, the German, French and Italian products and equipment used are specifically curated to complement the extraction process. The SG Face team adds that clients can expect immediate, visible results after a facial extraction, with smoother, clearer skin right after the treatment.
#4 Extraction facials aren’t as painful as you’d think
Facial extractions are often perceived as painful but in reality, they typically involve minimal discomfort rather than intense pain. The level of discomfort varies based on each person’s pain tolerance as well as the aesthetician’s technique. Extraction methods can be tailored to suit various skin types and personal preferences, so communication with your specialist is key. During blackhead removals, some may feel a slight pressure or pulling sensation, but it’s generally manageable.
While most individuals can undergo extraction facials without issues, those with hypersensitive skin may want to exercise caution or consult with a dermatologist beforehand.
#5 The recommended frequency for getting extraction facials varies
The general recommendation is to have extraction facials once a month. This aligns with the skin’s natural cycle of cell development and exfoliation. Do pay attention to your skin’s signals and consider booking a facial when pores feel congested or in need of deep cleansing. The frequency of extraction facials required by an individual will vary based on skincare goals and other factors. So, consulting with a professional aesthetician is recommended.
Curious about getting an extraction facial in Singapore? An EL reviewer went to SG Face for one. Here’s what he thought:
As a guy in my mid-30s, I have dealt with acne, oily skin and pesky blackheads since my teenage years. Finding a solution has been a struggle! I had tried a few extraction facials before, but never one that stuck. So I was excited to give SG Face’s extraction facials a try due to their long history.
When I arrived at the salon, located just steps from the Holland V MRT station, a warm and professional aesthetician greeted me and took the time to understand my skin history and concerns. She explained that the Collagen Extraction Facial, which uses marine collagen from tripeptides to nourish the skin, would suit my congested skin. The facial started with a gentle massage followed by exfoliation. Meanwhile, the tranquil music put me in total relaxation mode.
Then came the extraction. Starting top down from my forehead and slowly moving to my nose, cheeks and chin, my aesthetician used her tools to remove stubborn blackheads and whiteheads that had been clogging my pores and were responsible for all my acne. The extraction was a bit uncomfortable, but at no point was the pain unbearable. The half-hour extraction ended when the aesthetician placed a luxurious face mask over my face for some added hydration, immediately calming my skin.
The result was immediate; my skin felt much smoother right away with the usual lumps and bumps gone. Before I left, the aesthetician took time to explain some skincare tips that would prolong the benefits of the two-hour facial. I also liked that there was zero downtime nor any inflammation. Now, a few days later, my skin is still looking smooth and far less congested. There’s especially a huge difference in my skin’s texture – it feels soft and looks healthier overall. It feels like it can finally breathe! I’m really impressed with the results, as well as the SG Face team’s expertise, and can’t wait to return.
