World’s Best Airport Hotel? It’s Here!

At Crowne Plaza Changi Airport by IHG, the idea of a standard transit stay has been completely rethought. Recently named the World’s Best Airport Hotel for the 11th consecutive year at the Skytrax World Airport Awards, it stands out as a top choice for a Singapore layover – shaped in part by General Manager Greg Gubiani, who was recognised among the Top 100 Hotel General Managers of 2025.

So what’s the secret?

Greg, who brings more than 25 years of global hospitality experience to the role, believes the distinction lies in redefining what an airport hotel can be. “What makes the difference is not being considered an airport hotel, as airport hotels often carry negative connotations for many travellers,” he said in his interview with Luxury Lifestyle Awards. For him, modern luxury goes beyond location or facilities. “Luxury isn’t just about the surroundings; it’s about feeling understood, valued and genuinely cared for,” he explained.

Redefining airport hospitality

That philosophy underpins Crowne Plaza Changi Airport’s $22 million transformation completed in early 2024. The refurbishment introduced new guest rooms overlooking the pool, refreshed public spaces, added high-tech meeting facilities, revitalised the Club Lounge and fitness centre, and launched Allora, the hotel’s Italian all-day dining restaurant.

Wellbeing is another key focus. In January 2026, Crowne Plaza Changi Airport became the first hotel in Singapore to offer all guests access to NuCalm, a neuroscience-based in-room sleep technology designed to promote relaxation and restorative rest. Announcing the launch, Greg noted that integrating NuCalm reflects the hotel’s commitment to guest wellness and curated experiences – helping guests “recharge, recover and perform at their best, whether they’re here for business, leisure or both.”

That thinking extends to families. In 2025, Crowne Plaza Changi Airport launched aviation-themed family suites in collaboration with Kiztopia, creating playful, immersive spaces that mirror the excitement of travel itself.

And then there are the smaller touches: weekly Crowne Plaza Social gatherings where guests can learn to make fresh pasta, master the art of pizza, create a cheese board using regional Italian cheeses, or craft the perfect Negroni. Daily rituals include energising morning drinks, while communal spaces are designed to encourage connection. In Greg’s words, “We blend productivity, wellness, creativity and authentic connections… and ensure every guest at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport feels supported, engaged and genuinely cared for.”

After 11 consecutive years at the top of global airport hotel rankings, the lesson is simple: don’t think like an airport hotel. Think about how people really travel – what experience awaits them, how they can rest better, recover faster during their Singapore layover and feel ready for the next leg of their journey. Suddenly, that pre- or post-flight stay feels like something to look forward to!
