Wondering how to identify neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and learning disabilities in kids? Or how parents and caregivers may need support even as they diligently seek out therapeutic care for their child? DR BRIAN and CHLOE BENJAMIN of Benjamin Psychological & Therapeutic Services (BenjaminPTS) share how both parents and children can thrive.
How can BenjaminPTS help parents with neurodevelopmental conditions in their child?
If parents have any uncertainties or concerns regarding their child’s mental wellbeing, we’re here to help! Our clinic specialises in conducting comprehensive psychological assessments. These evaluations provide insight into various neurodevelopmental conditions including autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, learning disabilities and mood disorders.
What are some symptoms associated with neurodivergent children?
Every child is unique, and neurodevelopmental conditions and associated social-emotional challenges can present differently in every child. Children often exhibit a wide range of symptoms, which can vary depending on the specific condition.
For example, with autism spectrum disorder in children, symptoms can often appear at the age of two or three, although certain signs can sometimes be observed as early as 18 months. Symptoms can include challenges with communication and social interactions such as avoiding eye contact and difficulty understanding social cues, delays in speech and language development and sensory sensitivities.
For a child with ADHD, symptoms often begin to show a little later, around six to 12 years old. However, some symptoms can begin to show at preschool age too. Challenges and symptoms for a child with ADHD can include impulse control, hyperactivity and inattention. Symptoms can vary and at times present differently in girls and boys.
Why is early intervention and treatment important for children with learning disabilities and neurodiversity?
Identifying and understanding these challenges early on can significantly influence a child’s developmental trajectory and overall wellbeing.
Early treatment can improve a child’s social, emotional and academic development, nurturing a more adaptive and well-adjusted individual who is better equipped to navigate life’s challenges.
Early intervention empowers families with the knowledge and resources necessary to advocate effectively for their child’s needs, and fosters resilience and confidence within the family unit.
How are young patients supported within BenjaminPTS?
We prioritise a client-centred approach at our practice. This typically begins with an initial assessment of the child, and it continues with dialogue and collaboration with some of the most important people in the child’s life.
We work closely with parents and teachers, alongside healthcare professionals such as occupational therapists, speech therapists and psychiatrists. We tailor a personalised treatment plan for each child so that they can thrive and reach their full potential.
Our clinicians specialise in providing Art and Play Therapy, which helps young clients learn adaptive interpersonal skills and expressive mastery of emotions. These methods are particularly effective for young patients experiencing behavioural or emotional challenges, anxiety, trauma, neurodivergence and more.
Why is it important for the family to also seek support when they’re caring for their child?
Living with a child who is facing emotional or behavioural difficulties can sometimes present overwhelming challenges. Therefore, it’s crucial for both the child and the family to prioritise their emotional wellbeing.
