Need Venetian Blinds, blackout curtains or roller blinds?

26th August 2022 by Expat Living 3 Min Read

Choosing what you need for your space, but not sure what to get? Venetian blinds look good, or you might need something stronger like blackout curtains or blackout blinds? There’s also roller blinds, and handy ones to keep the sun, bugs and rain off balconies! Here are for five tips to keep in mind when choosing blinds in Singapore.

#1 Blackout blinds give you better sleep quality

Everyone knows about blackout curtains… but have you heard about blackout blinds?

For the uninitiated: there’s a “blackout” material that you may be able to opt for, depending on what type of blinds you’re getting (roller blinds, Korean combi blinds, roman blinds, and honeycomb blinds can all be made in this material). If you’re more partial to Venetian blinds, there’s also a “Night Mode” mechanism that reduces the gaps in between the slats when the blinds are closed.

If you’re choosing blinds in Singapore for your living or dining space, this obviously isn’t as important. But if your blinds are for your bedroom, it makes sense to opt for these materials and mechanisms!

#2 Venetian blinds give you more light control

If you want to control the exact amount of light filtering through your blinds, venetian blinds are a great choice. (These are the trendy blinds that are pretty common in minimalist or Scandinavian-themed homes these days.)

Venetian blinds are made using horizontal slats, and these slats can be tilted up or down to control the amount of light and privacy in your room.

Venetian blinds aside, there are also “top-down bottom-up” blinds, where the blinds descend from the top. These give you privacy, but still allow light to filter in from the top.

#3 Child safety systems are a thing

For those who have kids at home, opt for roller blinds with a motorised system or child safety system.

The former is pretty self-explanatory: the mechanism is motorised, so you won’t have any pulley strings lying around.

As for the latter, your pulley string can be detached and kept out of sight (preventing any accidents from happening). You can reattach the string as and when you want to use your blinds.

#4 Look for the relevant certifications when choosing blinds

As with anything else, you can get really affordable blinds from Taobao, or other online stores. That said, you want to make sure you’re getting something that’s good quality when you’re choosing blinds. The easiest way of doing this? Look for the right certifications.

For example, END Curtain in Singapore carries several product ranges that are Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and Greenguard-certified. This means that their products have been verified to contain no harmful chemicals. Greenguard, in particular, certifies that there are low-to-no VOC emissions arising from the usage of the blinds.

#5 Outdoor blinds help you make the most of your balcony

Wouldn’t you like to lounge on your balcony, enjoying a glass of wine as you wind down for the night? Sounds great in theory. But with Singapore’s hot and humid weather, this might not be the most realistic thing to do.

That’s where zip track guided outdoor blinds come in. With these blinds, you can fully seal off your balcony space and protect against sun, wind, rain and insects. Now you can wind down outdoors, and even host friends and family in comfort!
