If cotton has always been your go-to for bed sheets, Tencel’s lyocell fabric may well change your bedroom game forever. Cooling, moisture-wicking and Earth-friendly, these particular Tencel bed sheets have a story behind them.
Why this retailer turned to Tencel
When she started experiencing heat allergies in her 20s, Meem Nordin, owner of online store We Are Cozzy, turned her attention to the fabrics she was using. “I cannot tell you how many times I ended up breaking out in hives because the fabric I was using was either not breathable or didn’t dry quickly enough,” she says. That is, until she tried Tencel lyocell; and she knew that it was the answer.
Meem says, “I want more people to experience this cooling fabric first hand. It has improved my sleep quality significantly. It’s also one of the most breathable and sustainable fabrics available, making it perfect for warm sleepers; and perfect for our climate too.”
We Are Cozzy stocks a wide range of Tencel sheets; and Meem is confident they’re some of the best bed sheets in Singapore. They tick all the boxes, and are fast becoming the new go-to.
About the materials
Invented in 1982, lyocell is not new. However, with cotton holding the reins over brands at major stores, its superior characteristics have taken a while to find its ways to your bed. Lyocell is made of cellulose from wood fibres mainly from beech, birch, eucalyptus and spruce.
We Are Cozzy sheets are made from Austrian raw materials. The fabric is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to bacteria and dust mites. Also, the lyocell fabrication protocol makes it a superior sheet, resistant to fading, wear and tear.
Good cotton sheets can run into hundreds of dollars and they do last; but not all sheets are made the same. Even the costliest cotton could take months and years to settle into softness, and not all will go the distance like these Tencel bed sheets.
Lyocell is 50% more absorbent than cotton and is more efficient at wicking moisture away from your body so you feel cooler and the sheets lighter. This wicking quality also keeps sheets smelling fresh for longer periods.
Fans of Tencel bed sheets also find that they come out of the drier impressively smooth and can be folded and popped into the laundry cupboard straight away. The softness drapes easily for a well-made bed.
Since the fabric absorbs well, lyocell sheets readily take on rich and vibrant hues using less dye than cotton. Since it can be made from a variety of natural fibres, lyocell is cheaper to create than cotton and less punishing on land and water resources. What’s more, lyocell sheets are fully bio-degradeable, so they won’t be damaging the planet from the start to end of their life.
