“With five convenient locations across the island, local beauty spot Pink Parlour has made a name for itself in the waxing scene since 2005.
As it was a week leading up to my beach honeymoon, I jumped at the opportunity to review a Brazilian wax service ($60) and popped by the Jurong Point branch for a quick session. The first thing that struck me was how clean and spotless the salon was! Albeit a cosy space, the room was tidy and uncluttered. Hygiene is a priority here; there’s even a small shower booth for each customer to wash up before the waxing begins.
Hard wax is used for the sensitive and delicate Brazilian area, which helps to reduce the pain. Soft wax is also used to remove stubborn hair. Following this is an application of the salon’s in-house blend: an antiseptic and moisturising lotion for post-wax care. The best part? The whole session only took 10 minutes!”

Laser and Dynamic Pulsed Light (DPL)
If you’re looking for a long-term hair removal solution, Blush offers permanent hair reduction services in the form of laser and DPL. An upgraded version of IPL, DPL uses broad-spectrum, visible light to reduce hair permanently. A percentage of heat energy from the device is absorbed by the hair follicles, effectively destroying them. However, thicker and deeper hair follicles might not be reached and disabled effectively as the light is shone over a generic area. This is where laser comes in. In addition to its ability to focus on specific areas, the laser beam can travel deeper into the pores, thus treating the hair follicles that are residing deep in the skin. A combination of laser and DPL can help achieve a more accurate and permanent result of hair growth reduction.
For waxing services, Blush uses premium wax, as well as pre-care and aftercare products from Australia and France. These products can help to prevent hair breakage, ingrown hair, skin sensitivity and redness.
Variable Pulsed Light (VPL)
Beauty salon SenseDeBelle uses the FDA-approved Energist Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) to remove unwanted hair safely and easily, with none of the discomfort or pain commonly associated with invasive aesthetic treatments. Clinically proven to remove hair effectively, VPL treatments leave your skin looking smooth, silky an fuzz-free. The variable pulses of light emitted from the device are absorbed by the targeted chromophores in the skin, without the risk of the surrounding tissues overheating. Each light pulse consists of a sequence of rapid micro-pulses. The number, duration and frequency of micro-pulses can be adapted on the “pulse design screen” of the machine to suit various hair and skin types, ensuring optimum results even on darker skin tones.
The Energist VPL machine can also be used in facials to treat skin concerns like acne, pigmentation and vascular veins.
Electrolysis is the only hair removal method recognised as ‘permanent’ by the FDA. It’s safe for most parts of body and face, and treats hair of all colours and types, as well as skin tones. The treatment is offered at Renique Boutique, which is headed by Renuka who has over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry. Renique uses an innovative technology that’s powerful and faster than any epilator.
A fine sterile probe is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle. A tiny amount of current is applied, destroying the growth centre of the hair with chemical or heat energy. Renuka stresses the importance of consistent treatments. She recommends pairing electrolysis with Dynamic Pulse Control Light (DPC), a form of IPL, for faster results.
Sugaring, a waxing alternative, is an epilation method using a 100 percent water-soluble sugar paste. Made from white sugar, water and lemon juice, the paste is completely safe for all skin – even sensitive skin. Sugaring is offered at Sugar(ed), which has four outlets islandwide.
The sugar paste is directly applied to the skin at body tempertature (no scalding) and flicked off, removing hair from the roots in its natural direction of growth. Because of this, regrowth is slower, finer, softer and lighter in colour, leading to quick hair refinement and diminished hair growth, as well as far less hair breakage and fewer ingrown hairs. Sugaring has also been said to be less painful than common waxing methods.
On top of that, this technique helps to remove dead skin cells while removing unwanted hair, so you can look forward to brighter and cleaner skin right after! The recommendation is once every three to four weeks, depending on the individual’s hair growth rate. (Psst… Beauty Editor Anthia Chng swears by it!)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
IPL permanent hair removal at EstheClinic is totally painless thanks to the MacPeel’s No Pain System Technology. Unlike the static nature of the traditional IPL system, which delivers intense pulsed light in one sudden zap, EstheClinic’s treatment uses a handpiece that is constantly swept across the skin, covering a larger surface area within a shorter amount of time. Using the latest generation of IPL technology allows EstheClinic to administer a pain-free hair removal treatment without the need for numbing cream.
Apart from being painless, EstheClinic’s patented IPL hair-removal technology works twice as fast as traditional IPL technology. For example, a treatment comprising half-legs, bikini and underarms is completed in only 30 minutes. Also, there’s no downtime involved – after each session, you can immediately resume all your normal activities. Improvements are noticed by most clients after the first few treatments, with noticeably less hair and a slower rate of regrowth. Longer-lasting results become increasingly visible after each treatment. EstheClinic’s IPL hair removal is effective and safe for all skin types, with minimal risks even for the darkest skin tones. Note, however, that it’s not suitable for those with blonde, red or grey hair.

Try it at Supersmooth, a local startup offering quick and fuss-free laser hair removal that’s backed with a three-year warranty programme. New-generation laser diodes operate at a wavelength that skips your skin and goes straight for your hair roots, making it safe even for those with darker, richer skin tones. The hair root is damaged and your body purges it as waste material within two weeks.
First, unwanted hair is shaved before a cold gel is applied to the area of treatment. The laser selectively heats and destroys the hair follicles without damaging the surrounding skin tissue. Then, the gel is wiped off and you’re good to go! On average, a total of eight sessions – once every six weeks to start with, then every eight weeks over the course – are needed for full results. The best part? Thanks to Supersmooth’s three-year warranty, anything after your eighth session is covered, giving you peace of mind!
