Clothes shopping in Singapore? We hear lots of people moan that they trawl the malls and go home empty-handed because the sizing or the fit isn’t quite right. Sometimes the shoulders and arm lengths fit, but you can’t do the buttons up! Or trouser lengths are too short. A Medium in Singapore is definitely not the same as an M in Australia. So we asked around our readers to come up with suggestions to save your feet!
Anna Rainn – Wrap Dress and More
Not sure about you but I seem to fluctuate in size so I need something that’s a bit flexible, and standard dress sizes don’t fit my shape. These wrap dresses and tops fit most women, and their flexibility and designs are perfect for in-between sizes too! They do plus size clothes and for a few dollars more you can also adjust to suit – slightly longer in the length or shorter sleeves etc.
Anna Rainn is an old favourite of Expat Living, and I think there’s nothing easier to wear and more flattering than a good wrap dress for work or casual wear! This Singapore fashion brand is focused on empowering real women, busy women, multi-faceted women and women who want to look good living their 24/7 lifestyles. The philosophy, fabrics and styles are all geared to this one end, to “Look Good, Do Good and Feel Good”.
ANUPAMA SINGAL is a tech and fashion entrepreneur and the owner of the Anna Rainn brand. She’s passionate about body positivity amongst women, too.
Featured here with Anupama Singal are Dalia Feldheim (speaker, organisational psychologist, founder of Flow Leadership Consultancy) and Abam Mambo (speaker and Microsoft legal director) at the KeyNote Women Speakers’ IWD 2020 event, Equity in Action.
Anna Rainn clothing is primarily “Made in Singapore” and manufactured ethically, with a lot of care and high-quality materials that last for years. My daughter is wearing some of the ones I have outgrown, and they must be at least 10 years old. Also, with every purchase, the brand contributes to Urban Health Resource Centre, a non-profit that helps uplift economically disadvantaged families and children through education.
So, if you’re wanting comfortable, easy-care and easy-wear clothing to make you look and feel better, and you want to make a difference as you indulge yourself, take a look! You can buy online with free returns, or in store by appointment.
White Ginger – Clothes with generous sizes
White Ginger Breezy resortwear in loose silhouettes and super-soft fabrics – what’s not to love? White Ginger is one of our go-tos for casual daytime dresses and vacation-friendly basics. They were also awarded Gold in the category of Best Women’s Independent Fashion Outlet in our Readers’ Choice Awards 2020! Sizes go up to 16, and you’ll find designs that flatter curvier figures, too.
Tove & Libra – Flattering clothes
Founded by Christine and Ivan, whose families have been in the fashion manufacturing industry for over three generations, this Hong Kong-based label designs effortlessly chic, high-quality essentials for women. Tove & Libra’s capsule pieces are sleek and timeless, taking you from work to weekend, and office to bar, without compromising on style or comfort.
Conscious production is an essential element of the brand. The team favours fabrics that are either sustainably sourced or saved from landfill, and it owns the production facilities to ensure the entire manufacturing process is ethical.
As for the designs, you can expect wearable and travel-friendly separates in classic colours like navy, burgundy and black. The pants are popular for all the right reasons; they’re made to be slim-fitting and forgiving without a hefty price tag. You’ll also find a lovely line-up of tops and dresses that drape elegantly on curves, while providing a slimming effect on fuller figures. Additional touches like removable belts and strategic ribbing details are added, making each piece universally flattering.
Shopping at Tiffany’s – All sizes of clothes
For a dose of boho chic, head to this independent boutique in Tanglin Mall. Founded by Aussie Tiffany Maughan in 2001, the store offers a wide variety of dresses that suit multiple occasions. From luxurious silk kaftans and flowy maxi dresses to formal get-ups for cocktail events, the boutique stocks larger sizes and versatile styles with adjustable elements to fit different body types.
Indii Breeze – Flexible clothes
Love colours and prints? We do too! That’s why we’re digging locally-based online brand Indii Breeze for its fab range of stylish yet comfy essentials, set in bold prints and striking shades. Dress up your curves in their maxi dresses and jumpsuits – our favourite styles are the ones with adjustable waists and removable belts for a looser fit. The best part? The brand uses an uber-lightweight rayon fabric, which is also machine-washable.
Capsule by Juliette – A longer leg!
While this French fashion brand isn’t a plus-size label per se, its smart and elegant jumpsuits are known to be figure-flattering for women of various sizes. Plus, they’re available in a gorgeous selection of prints, colours and cuts, so you’re bound to find something you like from the mix! These jumpsuits also run longer in length, which means they’re perfect for those who are blessed in the height department.
For high street brands, Marks & Spencer scored for underwear and the basics, while Zara and Massimo Dutti both have good length trousers. And H&M have a pretty good range of sizes XXS up to 4XL.
Happy shopping in Singapore!
