Chicagoan DR ERICA GALE SMELTZER is the Founding Principal of RD American School (RDAS). She gives us a peek into preparations before this new international school in Singapore opens in January 2026. Dr Erica brings a global outlook on education and community from her years living in the US, Switzerland, Poland and China.
What brought you to Singapore?
I was approached with the opportunity to start RD American School in Singapore. I was inspired by the vision of our board and convinced by the founder’s passion for the project. The chance to build a school from the ground up as its Founding Principal was one I couldn’t resist.

Tell us a bit about your Founding Principal role at RDAS.
I’m responsible for everything at RDAS, from developing the academic programme to establishing the culture and ensuring that operations run smoothly.
Being able to set the tone and direction for a new international school in Singapore is exciting – it allows us to create a strong foundation that will benefit students and families for years to come.
What are you most looking forward to as the Head of RDAS in Singapore?
I’m most looking forward to seeing our vision for RDAS come alive in the community. I want to see students experiencing joy in their learning, teachers growing in their practice, and families feeling at home in the school.
The most rewarding part of my role will be watching people bring the vision to life together.
Any surprises you’ve found living and working at this new international school in Singapore?
What has surprised me most is how well the city integrates nature into everyday life. You can be in a bustling urban area one moment, and surrounded by greenery the next.
I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by how welcoming and warm people are – it has made the transition to living here much easier.
What do you do here when you’re not working?
I like to stay active; hiking, running and long walks are a big part of my lifestyle – they help me recharge mentally and physically.
I also enjoy exploring Singapore’s food scene and spending time with friends, often combining both by taking visitors on walking tours that end with a great meal.
Where in Singapore do you live, and what do you like about it?
I live near the East Coast. I love being close to the water and having easy access to green spaces. It provides a sense of balance and calm.

What are you looking forward to most for the rest of 2025 and into 2026?
I’m looking forward to seeing RDAS open its doors and to watching our first group of students flourish. The founding year of a new international school in Singapore is full of discovery and growth for everyone involved.
On a personal level, I’d like to deepen my connections in Singapore, continuing to learn and making time for restorative travel in the region.
