As an expat, sorting out legal issues here and abroad isn’t straightforward. Sometimes you might need a little free legal advice in Singapore before you’re ready to decide how you want to proceed. Here, Singapore-qualified lawyer at Legal Expat Singapore KENNETH PEREIRE shares how he and his Swiss lawyer co-founder saw a gap in the market for these type of expat services. The company offers legal resources on matters like immigration, starting a business, family law, inheritance law and employment law. Plus a gateway to formal legal advice when and if you need it.
Tell us a bit about Legal Expat Singapore and how it all began.
Legal Expat was founded in Switzerland by Swiss lawyer Nicolas Mossaz who is a Partner at the Swiss law firm OA Legal in Geneva, with the mission to provide expats with easy-to-understand legal guidance tailored to their unique needs. We have since expanded to Asia starting with Singapore first and have partnered with the Singapore-headquartered law firm KGP Legal LLC which is headed by myself, which operates across the Asia-Pacific (APAC). And we hope to expand our offerings in the wider APAC region in the future.
What online free legal advice in Singapore do you offer?
We serve as an online hub providing free resources and insights on expat-related legal issues, including work permits, employment matters, family concerns, and property. Our mission is to be the go-to source for expats seeking quick, practical legal guidance to navigate Singapore’s complex legal landscape. For those with pressing legal needs, we also facilitate easy connections with experienced professionals at KGP Legal Singapore or OA Legal Switzerland, who offer straightforward and practical advice tailored to the expat experience.
How is Legal Expat Singapore different from a law firm?
We’re not a law firm but an expat services platform providing accessible legal information. Unlike traditional firms offering formal legal opinions and services, we serve as a first point of contact, offering practical guidance to help expats explore their options. For more formal or specialised legal needs, we connect clients with trusted law firms and professionals equipped to provide expert support.
What kind of expat services do you provide?
Our platform offers guidance on common issues faced by expats in Singapore, from visa applications and employment contract reviews to family matters like divorce and child custody. We also assist with business setup, work permits, property purchases, and understanding rights and obligations. While we focus on providing practical advice upfront, we ensure clients have access to trusted legal experts for specialised assistance, supporting them throughout their expat journey.
What are the 5 areas of law you cover?
#1 Immigration
We help expats understand the various work and residency permits required in Singapore, such as Employment Passes, S Passes, and Dependent Passes. Our service includes visa application assistance, renewals, and advice on eligibility and requirements. We ensure that expats stay compliant with local regulations and can navigate the visa process smoothly.
#2 Employment
Employment law for expats can be complex, especially when it comes to negotiating contracts, handling disputes, or understanding workplace rights. We provide guidance on employment contracts, severance packages, wrongful termination, and workplace disputes, ensuring that expats know their rights and obligations in Singapore’s legal system.
#3 Family law
Family law matters, including divorce and child custody, can be particularly challenging for expats due to differing legal systems. We provide clear guidance on divorce proceedings, child custody arrangements, and property division, helping expats understand their rights and navigate these sensitive issues. Whether you’re facing a divorce, managing post-divorce matters, or working through custody concerns, we offer practical support to help you make informed decisions and achieve the best possible outcomes.
#4 Inheritance law
Similar to Family law, Inheritance laws in Singapore can differ from those in other countries, and it’s crucial for expats to understand their rights when it comes to estate planning, wills, and probate. We provide advice on drafting wills, managing estates, and understanding the implications of inheritance for foreign nationals. We can also assist expats with issues related to the transfer of assets in Singapore, ensuring that their wishes are respected.
#5 Starting a business
Starting a business in Singapore is an attractive option for many expats, but it requires a thorough understanding of local regulations and legal requirements. We offer advice on choosing the right business structure, registering a company, and ensuring compliance with local tax and employment laws. Whether you’re opening a small business, opening a foreign subsidiary to an existing business or planning a larger venture, we can help you set up and grow your business in Singapore.
