If you’ve ever watched the Olympics and felt a tiny itch of “I wish I could still cartwheel like that”, you’re not alone. Gymnastics in Singapore isn’t just for tiny tots in sparkly leotards. In fact, the scene has grown into a proper community, with pathways into competitive gymnastics, tumbling classes for kids building confidence and gymnastics for adults keen to rediscover old skills. There’s also a surprising number of local athletes chasing serious goals, including US college scholarships. And right in the middle of this growing scene is homegrown club The Yard.
Gymnastics in Singapore: From tumbling classes to competitive gymnastics
Singapore’s biggest gymnastics family
After more than a decade in Singapore, The Yard has become Singapore’s largest gymnastics operator, with studios in Jurong, Dover, Dempsey and Bukit Timah – with a High Performance and events space at Perennial Business City. The spaces are top-notch with Olympic quality setups, foam pits and more. But what people talk about most is the coaching team: a mix of local and international coaches who know how to support total beginners and guide athletes all the way to elite competition.
And it’s working. Alena Tan, a former homegrown Yard-trained gymnast of many years, has gone on to represent Singapore at the World Championships in Jakarta. Other gymnastics alumni, Lucy Warburton and Kiera Hunt, have gone on to earn NCAA gymnastics scholarship offers to the US. This is a huge milestone not just for the club, but also for Singapore gymnastics as a whole.
A community built on movement, not pressure
Despite the big achievements, the atmosphere isn’t intense or intimidating. The Yard puts community front and centre: in-house competitions, friendly festivals, mixed showcases where recreational kids and competitive athletes share the same floor. It’s less “serious athletes only” and more “everyone gets a moment to shine”, which is probably why families stay at this gymnastics studio in Singapore for years.
Adults get a genuinely fun entry point, with gymnastics classes focused on strength, flexibility and basic skills. There’s also that “oh wow, I can still do this” feeling, with no gymnastics history required. Younger gymnasts start with age-and-stage programmes: GymTots (18-36 months) for balance and movement, KinderTots (3-4 years) for obstacle-course fun and gross motor development, and FUNdamentals (5-10 years), where kids rotate through vault, bars, beam and floor enjoying structured, confidence-building sessions.
After that, the pathways open up – Trampoline, Freestyle, Tumbling Classes, NinjaZone – or the Development and Competitive programmes. Boys’ MAG squads and girls’ WAG squads train more intensively (up to 24 hours a week at the higher levels) with eyes on regional and national competitions.
For those with bigger dreams
The High Performance programme and the Collegiate Gymnastics Pathway (CGP) give athletes a real shot at national representation and US college opportunities. With NCAA signings and world-stage appearances already on the board, it’s no longer a far-fetched goal.
Programmes at The Yard in Singapore include competitive gymnastics, gymnastics for adults and children, trampolining, freestyle, tumbling classes, ninja zone, holiday camps and birthday parties. (Trials from $65.)
