“SG60: To Build A Swing” at LOY Contemporary Art Gallery
15 August - 30 September
As Singapore approaches its 60th anniversary, SG60: To Build a Swing brings together three artists – Akai Chew, Joanna Maneckji and Wan Kyn Chan – whose works reflect on identity, memory and transformation. Curated by Lexïng Zhang, the exhibition explores what it means to belong, to remember, and to dream forward, through deeply personal responses to the city’s evolving landscapes.
Akai Chew’s installations and photo series revisit Singapore’s modernist architecture, questioning what is lost in the name of progress. Joanna Maneckji’s mixed media collages celebrate renewal and resilience, drawing on spiritual iconography and everyday materials. Wan Kyn Chan’s glowing sculptural installation turns personal walking data into light-mapped memories – offering a meditative encounter with the paths we leave behind.
United by a shared sensitivity to place and imagination, the exhibition invites viewers to consider how art can help shape collective futures. Like the poem that inspired its title, To Build a Swing calls on us to gather tools – real or symbolic – and build together.
