Marking the 83rd anniversary of the Fall of Singapore, Resilience in Adversity is a docent-guided tour and hand-bound notebook workshop at Changi Chapel and Museum. As part of the annual Battle for Singapore programme, this experience invites participants to uncover the resilience and ingenuity of those who endured its darkest days.
During World War Two, the internees of Changi Prison faced extreme shortages of food, shelter, and basic necessities. Yet, through sheer resourcefulness, they scavenged materials and crafted everyday essentials such as soap, vitamin supplements, prosthetics, and even toothbrushes.
Find out more about their creativity and resilience through a docent-guided tour where actual items belonging to former internees will be displayed, including a hand-stitched notepad made by Sergeant John Ritchie Johnston out of old prison records. Be inspired by their ingenuity and create your own hand-bound notebook using upcycled materials in a guided craft session after the tour.
Hosted by the National Museum of Singapore, Resilience in Adversity is open to ages 10 and above, with admission and craft materials included.
