Co-founder of luxury travel company Lightfoot Travel NICO HEATH chats about his lifelong passion for exploring, how to plan a safari trip to Africa and some of his recommendations. Plus, we delve into how he creates tailor-made African safari packages that touch on some top sights and experiences.
You travelled a lot when young – any strong memories from that period?
I was fortunate to spend time in Africa, the Caribbean and Scotland, and each place left an indelible mark on me. When I was 15, we travelled through Zimbabwe and Botswana, canoeing up the Zambezi River, fly camping on riverbeds and exploring the Okavango Delta. The sense of adventure and stunning wildlife encounters in raw and beautiful landscapes left a lasting impression.
What is your background in the travel industry?
Initially, I was a guide in Africa, which gave me an understanding of the expectations of discerning travellers at ground level. Later, I managed high-end travel itineraries, which reinforced my belief in the transformative power of travel and the need for well-curated experiences.
What’s your favourite personal African safari story or anecdote?
A standout memory is sleeping in riverbeds under mosquito nets in Zambia and walking in the Mara reserve with three Maasai warriors and encountering three male lions. Witnessing desert lions in Namibia was also an extraordinary experience.
What was your aim with Lightfoot Travel, and how has the company developed?
We founded Lightfoot Travel in 2009 to introduce bespoke, luxury travel to Asia. At the time, the concept of personalised, tailor-made travel experiences was relatively new to the region. We’ve embraced technology to enhance our service offerings, and we’ve expanded our reach beyond Asia, catering to a global clientele.
Which African safari packages and destinations appeal to you most and why?
It’s hard to choose one as each country offers something unique. Kenya captivates with its warm, welcoming people and diverse landscapes. Zambia provides a more untouched experience with pristine areas. For those seeking more glitz and glamour (and incredible food and wine), Cape Town is a must.
How do you pick the lodges to send your guests to?
Our lodge recommendations are entirely tailored to guests’ preferences. At Lightfoot Travel, we curate 100 percent bespoke itineraries, leveraging our close relationships with lodge suppliers to match guests with the perfect camp or lodge. Some desire a high-end luxury experience; others prefer to stay at Africa’s more authentic, rustic safari lodges.
Do some customers have concerns about how to plan a safari trip to Africa that’s safe? How do you allay their fears going to a wild or remote destination?
Some guests do have concerns about this, and about the various safety protocols at camps. For peace of mind (particularly for families with younger children) we suggest fenced camps. Also, booking early ensures you have the pick of the best family-friendly accommodation. We also offer pre-trip calls to address concerns – and I always emphasise the importance of listening to the camp managers’ safety briefings and adhering to age restrictions for more “wild” Africa safari packages and experiences such as canoeing and walking safaris.
Any tips you can give for booking African safari packages?
The expert team of travel consultants at Lightfoot Travel have a deep knowledge and plenty of first-hand experience travelling in Africa, ensuring guests get the most out of their trip and that every small detail is taken care of.
Lightfoot Travel arranges tailor-made safari packages to Kenya from S$9,000 per person, including six nights’ full-board accommodation, transfers and domestic flights. Lightfoot are one of the preferred travel partners of Great Plains Conservation.
