Setting goals and achieving them in 2026!
Flex Studio Singapore – Classical Pilates exercise classes
HEATHER THOMAS, a Classical Pilates educator, shares practical advice on setting goals, staying motivated and making movement sustainable for the year ahead.
What’s one realistic piece of advice you’d give someone who’s planning on getting fit in the new year?
When setting your fitness goals, especially with classical Pilates, it’s important to choose realistic, gradual objectives that honour your body’s natural pace and alignment. Focus first on mastering core control and precision rather than rushing to add intensity. This approach builds sustainable progress, making it easier to stay consistent and avoid burnout as you gradually build confidence and strength.

Motivation naturally dips – what do you personally do on the days you’re just not feeling it?
On days when motivation wanes, it helps to focus on movement rather than intensity. Choosing a lighter, enjoyable activity – like stretching or a gentle classical mat Pilates session – can keep the habit alive without pressure. Reminding yourself of your long-term health goals and how good you feel after a session often helps you push through; sometimes simply showing up is the biggest win.
Are there any small daily habits or routines that make a big difference over time?
To stay consistent and get the most from your classical Pilates practice, focus on small daily habits like mindful core engagement and controlled breathing. Stay aware of your posture throughout the day and add gentle mobility movements. These simple steps boost alignment, reduce tension and contribute to lasting improvements in flexibility, balance, coordination and overall wellbeing.

How do you encourage clients to stay consistent beyond the first few weeks of the year?
Beyond the initial New Year excitement, it’s a good idea to set achievable goals and check in regularly on your progress. Adjust your routine to match what you enjoy and what works best for you. Celebrate even the small achievements and remind yourself that every step forward builds your strength and confidence. Making your fitness journey personal and positive helps you keep going consistently throughout the year.

Aqua Tula – aqua exercise classes
This boutique fitness brand, established in 2019, brings a revolutionary approach to water-based workouts. With customised group and private exercise classes available in homes and condos across Singapore, the “Aqua Tula method” can be tailored for all fitness levels. This includes those with physical challenges and members who want to lose weight. We hear from founder MALISSA SANDER, a fitness trainer in Singapore.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give for setting goals in the new year?
Focus on workouts you genuinely enjoy rather than chasing trends. For me, the “Three W’s” – water, walking and weights – provide strength, cardio and flexibility, and they work wonders for my mental health.
How do you stay motivated, especially on days when you’re not feeling it?
I remind myself how great I’ll feel afterwards. If I’m not up for intense cardio, I opt for low-intensity exercises like ankle-weight water workouts or toning movements with aquatic boxing mitts in deep water. This leaves me refreshed and mentally clear, with a steady, elevated heart rate similar to a brisk walk.
Are there any small daily habits that help you stay on track with your goals?
I eat when hungry and choose energy-boosting meals instead of following strict mealtime schedules. This helps me stay light, focused and in tune with my body.
