After you’ve set up the basics in your new home, from beds to sofas, it’s time to make it yours with some accessories. Table lamps, room dividers and screens can make living spaces more functional as well as beautiful.
You’ll need table lamps for the living room and the bedrooms especially, and you might need to use a room divider to create different spaces – living and dining, for example, or for two siblings in one bedroom. Using screens or antique doors for this can create something quite sensational!
Our old-time favourite Just Anthony is known for antique and vintage furniture, but they also have lots of accessories. I’ve bought bedside lamps from them, a Kwan Yin statue and, at the beginning of the year, the most beautiful little blue horse for the Year of the Horse (well, that was my excuse). It’s all reasonably priced, too.

Table lamps
The bases of these lamps come in a whole range of colours, patterns and styles – tall, short, round and square. And the shape of lampshades varies too, so there’s something for every space. There are usually new styles coming in through the year, so don’t rush – just buy the one that you really love, and you can add another later.
Table lamps are items you can easily take with you when you move, so it’s a good idea to go for something like this that you can keep, and it will always remind you of Singapore. I already have one of ours in my daughter’s house in the UK; it’s made from an old pottery Chinese pillow – probably not very comfy. It looks great (like the one pictured above) and I always think of Just Anthony when I look at it.
Room dividers
Growing up, my girls had to share a bedroom in a couple of homes here. We also had a large bedroom in an older place that had a desk in it. In both places, I used screens to divide the space. For our bedroom, we had an ornate Chinese screen that looked quite exotic. For the girls’ room, it was a wooden antique door that did wonders in stopping disputes over floor area for toys.
As well as room dividers, these beautiful carved or painted screens and doors can be used as artwork – no need for hooks in walls; they even have headboards. I have also seen people use them on condo verandahs to block other washing!
What else?
If you need some little extras, also have a look at the store’s modern Chinese vases, trays, candle holders and bowls. I know the term treasure trove is overused these days, but this is one place where it can be used authentically! There are regular shipments coming in, so pop in or have a look online.
