Curious about how pico laser helps fade age spots and rejuvenate the skin? We check in with DR RACHEL HO, Medical Director of La Clinic, who has a special interest in minimally invasive anti-ageing treatments. (You can also hop over to her educational blog for more skincare tips!) Plus, our editor-in-chief Rebecca gives pico laser a go – read on to see what she thinks.

What exactly is pico laser and how does it work?
Pico laser is an advanced, non-invasive laser technology that delivers ultra-short pulses in picoseconds. This laser effectively treats a range of dermatological conditions by using a photomechanical effect that reduces pigmentation and stimulates collagen production with minimal collateral heating or damage to the surrounding tissues.
What are some skin issues it can tackle, from age spots to melasma?
Pico laser is particularly effective for tattoo removal, as well as treating pigmentary conditions like melasma, photoaging, age spots and sun spots. It’s also great for rejuvenating the skin by improving skin tone and texture.
What are some benefits of pico laser compared to other lasers on the market?
One of the key advantages is that it treats the conditions mentioned above with minimal injury to surrounding tissues. It’s associated with fewer side effects, even in darker skin types and typically requires fewer treatments for conditions like melasma and tattoo removal. Pico laser is also considered safer for patients with darker skin, as it presents fewer risks compared to older lasers.
What does the treatment feel like? Is it painful?
Patients often describe the sensation during treatment as tingly, biting or warm.
Are there any risks we should know about before jumping in?
Side effects from pico laser are generally mild and transient, with redness being the most common. It typically subsides within a few hours to a couple of days. Rare side effects can include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, bleeding and hypopigmentation.
Do you customise this treatment for different skin types and issues?
Yes, pico laser is highly customisable, with parameters tailored to the patient’s specific dermatological condition and skin type to ensure optimal results.
Are there some skin issues where this treatment might not be the best option?
Pico laser may not be as effective for treating acne, as it has limited effects on sebaceous glands. It’s also not ideal for treating deep wrinkles because it doesn’t target facial muscles.
I’m hoping to get rid of my age spots permanently. How long do the results last?
Once hyperpigmentation is cleared by pico laser, the results are long-lasting. However, hyperpigmentation may recur independently of pico laser treatment. Patients typically see sequential improvement in their hyperpigmentation within four weeks. Follow-up sessions can be repeated every four to six weeks to maintain or enhance results.
How much does pico laser cost at La Clinic?
The cost for a first-time trial session is $375, while each subsequent session is priced at $575.
Rebecca’s experience with pico laser at La Clinic:
With over 10 years of experience in aesthetic medicine under her belt, Dr Rachel Ho is not only very knowledgeable but also detailed. She takes the time to explain everything fully, from how the consultation will flow to what the treatment process involves and the timeline for when you’ll start seeing results.
I had pico laser done about four years ago and remember how painless and quick it was. This time, it felt even more comfortable – just a faint smell of burning face hair, which is a good thing! There was no downtime at all. I could even go down the lift into Metro for a quick shoe shop right after without any redness or marks. Bargain!
I definitely saw a difference after my last pico laser. There were fewer age spots and a revival in skin quality in general. This time, I have to wait around three weeks to see the full changes. But I’m already noticing small improvements like lessening of age spots and improved skin texture. If it means wearing less foundation, I think it’s something I should do on a more regular basis.
What I really appreciated about La Clinic was the lack of criticism when it came to my skin. There was no hard sell – in fact, quite the opposite. I was keen to explore a few other options, but the approach was very much “let’s take a look at how this goes first and then we can see what you think from there.” That was refreshing and really made an impression.
