Have you noticed that your child is struggling to view objects in the distance? Poor eyesight may be the culprit. What can you do if you suspect that your child has eye problems such as myopia? VANESSA YEO BARGER of Lenskart provides some tips and approaches, including eye tests and myopia control glasses for kids. Plus, read on for a special deal on lenses and frames!
Myopia and its causes
Myopia is a vision condition where close objects are clear but objects further away appear blurred. Commonly referred to as near-sightedness, myopia tends to run in families.
According to Vanessa, 60% of children in Singapore have myopia by the age of 12. The condition stabilises between the ages of 20 to 40 years.
Often, a child isn’t able to communicate what is the problem or doesn’t know any difference. Vanessa suggests some ways that parents can recognise myopia in their child:
- Persistent squinting
- Constantly needing to sit closer to the television, movie screen or the front of the classroom in order to see clearly
- Being unaware of distant objects
- Excessive blinking
- Frequent rubbing of eyes
How to identify myopia
Near-sightedness can be confirmed by a basic eye test at an optician such as at Lenskart. While it cannot be reversed, vision can be corrected with myopia control lenses or contact lenses.
Since myopia runs in families, parents are encouraged to bring their child for an eye test from as early as four or five years.
Lenskart’s approach to myopia control
Lenskart encourages parents to have their child’s eyes tested regularly, especially if there’s a family history of myopia or other eye conditions. They suggest that children with normal vision should get their eyes checked annually while children who already have myopia should have an eye check every six months to control the myopia progression.
Vanessa explains, “This way, the optometrist can detect problems early, recommend the appropriate treatment to prevent myopia in children from getting worse and monitor their progress. Our optometrists at all Lenskart outlets are well versed in children’s needs and are experienced in performing a full comprehensive eye test.”
Your child’s vision, colour vision and three-dimensional vision are tested in the eye test. Based on this, the optometrist will be able to suggest suitable myopia control glasses for your child.
Lenskart has a combination of prescription glasses and frames to accompany active children throughout the day.
Their Pro-Grip range of frames are lightweight with non-slip slides – ideal for an active child or one who loves the outdoors. And their BLU protection lenses reduce blue light, UV rays and glare from screens or bright light. This helps in reducing strain on your child’s eyes on screen-heavy days. These lenses are also dust- and scratch-resistant.
With the appropriate myopia control glasses, Vanessa says, your active child will be able to see far objects clearly through their day.
