I discovered a 150-year-old jeweller in Singapore!

20th March 2023 by Verne Maree 4 Min Read

https://expatliving.sg/gold-jewellery-platinum-and-diamond-rings-gold-earrings-and-more/

Gold and diamond rings, anyone? A new pair of stylish gold earrings? I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t be more delighted that gold jewellery has come back into fashion.

In last summer’s Paris Couture Week, for example, statement jewellery in all shades of gold dominated the runways. Not that the precious yellow metal is ever exactly out of fashion. But silvery hues, be it platinum, white gold, or silver itself, have dominated the fashion jewellery space for the past twenty years or so.

I’m old enough and spoilt enough by my generous husband to have a small collection of now-vintage gold, including gold and diamond rings and several pairs of gold earrings that I adore. Still, as a woman who loves jewellery, I naturally always have my antennae out for a beautiful new piece to update my jewellery box.

But there’s a dilemma. With all those famous designer brands out there, where do you start looking? Where do you look for ageless authenticity, top-quality European craftsmanship and fashion-forward style? None of this comes cheaply, and you really do want to get it right.

Niessing Jewellery in Singapore

So, I was excited to hear about Niessing, a multi-award-winning German jewellery brand that is available from its flagship boutique in Takashimaya. Established in 1873, Niessing is anything but a newcomer. In fact, it has 150 years of heritage in contemporary jewellery design.

“The brand is celebrated for its legacy in cutting-edge innovative craftsmanship that has always been ahead of its time,” says the jewellery company’s CEO, Sandro Erl. Best of all, each Niessing creation is crafted at the company’s own manufactory in Vreden, Germany. “From melting the bars of gold or platinum, to finishing each piece, all our jewellery is made in Vreden,” he confirms with pride.

When it comes to research and development, the Vreden workshops work closely together with the design department in Dusseldorf. “Combining craftsmanship, technology and art is the way we create truly good design,” says Sandro.

Gold suits everyone, says Niessing Jewellery!

Niessing offers a spectrum of gold colours, at least one of which is bound to flatter your own unique colouring. For example, Spring Green evokes a countryside meadow, while Solaris recalls the warm glow of sunset. Or go for a piece in finest platinum, or even one of the innovative range of new silver shades.

A look at the Niessing Spannring

High on my personal wish-list would be this stunning Spannring (or Tension ring). Its unique design seems to suspend the fine diamond in mid-air, giving it the illusion of floating above the lucky finger of the wearer.

Yes, I already have a diamond solitaire engagement ring to go with my gold wedding band. But after 10, 20 or 30 years of marriage, perhaps women like us have earned a second or even third gold or platinum ring. What do you think? (It’s worth a try – or simply spoil yourself!)

Other award-winning Niessing Jewellery designs

# Colette C

Design Award Winner 2023

Colette is an interpretation of intuitive design: a band that’s loosely coiled around the wrist and then knotted at the ends. With Colette, the band becomes the Niessing Coil, and the knot is represented by a sphere.

Depending on your choice, these intricate bracelets, rings and necklaces (or colliers) reflect your personality and mood. Wear them solo, or adorned with additional spheres, roundels, or fine diamond “architecture”: single, double, or a stunning five-diamond “wave” formation, all framed with gold or platinum.

The Embrace ring comes in a single overlapping strand. Version 2 winds around twice. For added impact, longer fingers could opt for three, four or even five windings. With my long fingers, I’d go for the five-fold ring.

Bracelets come in a similar range of configurations, and all, of course, in Niessing’s most popular colours.

# Mirage

Red Dot Award 2017 Best of the Best, German Design Award Winner 2018

Described as a vision of weightlessness in gold and platinum, the Mirage collection is inspired by the play of light and shadow. Designs evoke natural structures such as delicate leaves, feathers and dragonfly wings. The effect is “shimmering and flickering, smooth and silky”.

Lust, like me, after these round or oval earrings, or a gold or platinum ring. Or be seduced by a double or triple bangle, a precious pendant. Or even – if you’ve been working extra-hard or been extremely good! – the spectacular Niessing Mirage collier.

# Topia

Red Dot Award 2014 Best of the Best

In this collection of designs reflecting the fascinating features of a natural landscape, delicately thin precious metal is hand-folded to form a pendant, a brooch, a ring or earrings. Niessing Topia has been described as a trip around the world, inspired by the vastness of pristine nature. Wrought in gold, it may bring desert dunes to mind. In platinum, it’s reminiscent of the planet’s highest mountains. Plus, each individual piece is unique. Don’t you love that?

# Topia Vision

German Design Award Special Mention 2023

Taking the imaginative Topia range to the next level, these pieces from the Topia Vision collection combine graphic patterns and abstract structures to evoke natural phenomena. Think gossamer soap bubbles, misty clouds, or glittering reflections on the sea. Or even, depending on how you see it, the play of light in an illuminated cityscape.

# Cube

German Design Award Gold 2020

In this tribute to Bauhaus aesthetics, geometric order is juxtaposed with dynamic movement in an immensely satisfying way. These Niessing Cube platinum or gold earrings and pendant make a style statement that is both timeless and boldly contemporary.

It all starts with four rectangles of precious metal, interlinked to form a cuboid structure. Once threaded and lifted up, how they look will change according to the way the coil or the earrings move in response to the movements of the wearer. Lines and surfaces form and dissolve, dip and tilt, while playing with reflections, light and shade.
