Based in the Bazaruto National Park Archipelago off the coast of Mozambique, a stay at Azura Benguerra Island isn’t complete without embarking on open ocean fishing. We take a dive into what you can expect game fishing in Mozambique from how to catch Sailfish and black marlin to cruising with dolphins.
World renowned game fishing in Mozambique
Azura is surrounded by coral reefs that are protected from warming sea temperatures by a 3,000 metre continental drop-off plunging into the Mozambican channel. From the depths, nutrient rich upwellings rise and cause an explosion of zooplankton and phytoplankton. This offers a great food source for small fish who in turn are preyed upon by larger and larger fish. At the top of this food chain are the highly prized black marlin and sailfish.
Sailing within the National Park, you’ll have a chance to discover one of the best preserved marine environments in the entire Western Indian Ocean. And hopefully wrangle with some mighty fish while you’re at it!
What to expect on a game fishing charter in Mozambique
The Azura team of experienced anglers use a NovaCat Sportfisher boat decked out with all the latest rods, reels and lures. During the trip, you’ll see that in Azura all game fishing in Mozambique for billfish is strictly on a “catch and release” basis to help to protect the ecosystem.
During a fishing charter, you’ll likely see plenty of other marine life, too. The reefs are home to over 2,000 fish species, 400 coral species, five turtle species, six dolphin species, humpback whales in winter and Africa’s last viable population of dugongs – the famous mammals that inspired tales of mermaids.
When and how to catch Sailfish and black marlin
Bazaruto National Park is one of only two prime breeding locations for the black marlin worldwide. Large females (up to 550kg!) arrive in big numbers around the beginning of September until the first week of December. Small males and juvenile black marlins are found year-round along with sailfish, which also have a peak season between April and August.
How to get to the resort
Fly into Vilanculos, Mozambique from Johannesburg, South Africa. Then take a short and scenic helicopter ride to reach Azura Benguerra Island and the resort.
