Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship

Discover the family, art and entrepreneurship journey of three generations of three Peranakan women – Nyonya Oeij Soen King, her daughter-in-law Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing and the former’s granddaughter Jane Hendromartono – through batik. The family produced batik from the 1890s to the 1980s in the renowned batik centre of Pekalongan on Java’s north coast.

Through textiles and objects, the exhibition showcases each woman’s response to the rapid political, cultural, and economic changes of their times.
