How do you introduce a jazz great to people who don’t (yet) listen to jazz? Start here! DIANNE REEVES, five-time Grammy winner and one of the most expressive voices in modern vocal music, is returning for a jazz concert in Singapore as part of the Mosaic Music Series. Whether you’re a longtime fan or brand new to her sound, head down to this concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall for romance, storytelling and knockout musicianship.
It’s been 16 years since your last concert in Singapore. What can audiences expect to be different – or familiar – in a Dianne Reeves concert?
I can’t believe it’s been 16 years – that’s too long! Well, I have lived a lot of life since I was last in Singapore. My instrument is richer and my enthusiasm and energy have not changed. Perhaps the best answer to your question is simply that I have way more to sing about!
Do you feel that your Grammy wins have changed your career or your musical approach? What musical milestones matter most to you?
The Grammys are an indicator you’re being heard and appreciated – and while I’m grateful, it hasn’t changed my approach. Grammys, honorary doctorates and so on are a validation for what I choose to do. However, if I were to allow anything other than my creative spirit to affect my musical choices, the accolades might end – but I’m certain it would be the end of my happiness with what I do.
It’s important to be true to yourself. My musical approach is my “honesty”, and maintaining what’s true to me despite all of the trials and tribulations I’ve been through – and there is way more than 16 years of them! – is my greatest milestone.
Many people love jazz vocals for romance and storytelling. Dianne Reeves, any album recommendations?
A few of my favourites:
- Shirley Horn – Here’s to Life
- Song Yi Jeon – The Earthy Suites
- Cécile McLorin Salvant – The Window
- Michael Mayo – Fly
What keeps your voice and headspace healthy while on tour?
I have a great band and a wonderful team that helps me stay relaxed – and as I love what I do, I’ve learned how to take best care so I can keep on doing it.
When you land in a new city, what grounds you – walks, cafés, quiet time?
I love to go for walks where there are lots of people… I love the flavours of humanity. Dinner with my band and friends at a restaurant highly recommended by locals is also an enjoyable point of entry to a new place.
What’s next after Dianne Reeves in Singapore – recordings, collaborations or projects outside music?
I have two wonderful collaborations coming out soon. One is a duo record with my longtime friend and guitarist Romero Lubambo. The other is with Branford Marsalis, celebrating the centennial of the birth of the great John Coltrane. The recording and tour will cover the album Coltrane did with Johnny Hartman – and more.
Quickfire questions for Dianne! What’s your favourite…
Coffee order: A latte with oat milk.
Pre-show ritual: What I refer to as a “family dinner” with my band.
Jet-lag cure: Drink lots of water and get some sun.
Favourite Singapore hawker? It’s been a while – let me get back to you on that! I’m definitely looking forward to exploring what’s new.
Travel item you never leave behind: My toothbrush!
Three songs on repeat right now: To be really honest, in my spare time it is silence that I have on repeat.
