Job hunting can be a stressful and tedious process involving dozens of emails, aptitude tests and paperwork – in fact, finding a job often feels like a job in itself! So when you finally clinch an interview for that perfect job (perhaps with flexible work arrangements!), it’s important to present yourself in the best way possible. That’s why it’s useful to find helpful interview tips. For a start, here are some important interview questions to ask.
Good job interview questions to ask
#1 “Are flexible work arrangements available?”
From 1 December 2024, all employers in Singapore are required to “fairly consider formal requests from employees for flexible work arrangements“. Post-COVID, many companies have embraced flexible working hours as well as work-from-home arrangements. If you’ve grown used to these options and this is a major factor while job hunting, asking the right interview questions can help you learn more about these options.
#2 “What opportunities are there for professional development?”
If you plan on sticking with a company for a long time (an attitude that in itself will be impressive to employers) it’s essential to look at potential for professional growth and promotions within the company. When asking interview questions like this, make sure that there are clear answers on career paths and timelines rather than non-committal guesses. You should also check if the company will sponsor additional training to take on more senior roles in your field. This helps to ensure that the role aligns with your long-term career goals and learning aspirations.
#3 “How often are performance reviews conducted and what are the key performance indicators for this role?”
With any new role, the first few weeks can be stressful and taxing and it isn’t uncommon to feel that you need additional feedback. This interview question will help you find out the frequency of performance reviews, you’ll have a better idea about how often to expect feedback and evaluations. Discussing the metrics of the KPIs will also help you understand how your performance will be measured and what success looks like in the role.
#4 “What challenges is the team currently facing?”
This interview question offers two benefits. First, it gives you a chance to prepare for any difficulties. The second benefit is that it gives you an opportunity to pose a solution for the problem or offer suggestions that may alleviate the problem. It also shows that you’re capable of understanding real-world issues.
#5 “What tools or resources are available for employees?”
Whether you’re an editor, stack developer or designer, it’s important to know what software, systems and resources are available to new hires. This interview question is vital because it gives you an idea of specific software and equipment that’s available for you. If the company is providing you with resources you’re experienced with, that is definitely something worth bringing up in the interview. If you’re unfamiliar with them, it’s also worth asking if training will be provided.
#6 “What benefits can employees expect?”
One of the most important interview tips is to focus on what you bring to the table as an employee. Towards the latter part of the interview is where you should start asking questions about company benefits. This includes your annual leave entitlement, holiday closures as well as health insurance. While many companies offer health insurance, it’s not mandatory so it’s prudent to find out more before moving forward with the next steps.
