Have you, like many of us, seen a change in skin conditions since moving to Singapore? (Hello, sun spots, oily pores and new pimple scars!) Here, we sit down with dermatologists DR KOK WAI LEONG and DR KONG YAN LING from Dermatology Collective Clinic & Surgery, who give us the lowdown on why these tropical skin concerns happen – plus how a 4S super pico laser treatment in Singapore may be able to help.
Many expats find their skin changing quickly after moving to Singapore. Why is that?
Dr Kong: The weather here is hot, humid and sunny all year. That shift alone can throw skin off balance. Breakouts, sun spots, eczema flares and darkening of pigmentation are all common tropical skin concerns. Even air-con, detergents or just adjusting to local water can make skin more reactive. It’s something I see often, and usually small changes in skincare make a big difference.

Tell us about the 4S super pico laser treatment in Singapore. How does it help with these tropical skin issues?
Dr Kong: This treatment is a bit of an all-rounder. In one session, it can target pigmentation like sun spots, improve pimple scars and texture, tighten pores, calm down small vessels and even help with hair reduction. It does this because the system has multiple modes and wavelengths, so we can treat different concerns in one go.
Exclusively distributed by Servicom Medical Singapore, this 4S super pico laser treatment also features a signature treatment modality known as FracRevive+, which harnesses multiple laser modes in one device, allowing it to address a spectrum of concerns in a single session. These include minimising pores, fading pigmentation, softening wrinkles, improving acne and pimple scars, refining skin texture and reviving your skin with a brighter, more even skin tone.

What are the benefits of combining laser modes into one session?
Dr Kok: The key advantage is personalised treatment for each individual, which can be achieved by integrating different modes for the same person and in the same session. This is because it is common for a person to have multiple skin concerns.
To achieve the desired results, a dermatologist can customise a plan using a combination of wavelengths for different skin depths and structures. It’s important to identify the area to be treated and carefully choose pre-determined wavelengths. By doing so, light energy from the lasers is selectively absorbed by targeted skin tissues, without harm to the surrounding structures. This allows focused solutions for optimal effects, yet reduces collateral damage on the other areas of the skin.
Why is this 4S super pico laser treatment particularly suitable for those of us living in Singapore?
Dr Kok: The laser utilises energy at specific wavelengths to target different problem areas in the skin. Many individuals who live in tropical climates have problems with skin tone. The laser can stimulate collagen production and accelerate cell regeneration in areas of need, aiding in skin rejuvenation and improving texture and radiance.
In addition, the laser targets different pigmentation problems, including freckles, sun spots, age spots and melasma, by breaking down melanin at the different layers of the skin that the pigment cells reside in.
Another common skin concern that patients have here is acne or pimple scars, which can be difficult to manage. The laser harnesses the concept of fractional technology, which is utilised for targeting acne and pimple scars. This process allows laser energy to reach the deeper skin layer to stimulate the skin’s natural healing response, an important process for scar reduction.
What’s the treatment process like?
Dr Kok: It usually starts off with a consultation and physical examination to identify the areas to be treated by your dermatologist, who may take note of your medical history, allergies or prior treatments done.

Before this laser treatment in Singapore, your skin will be prepared and numbing creams will be applied. There is little discomfort experienced during the treatment, but you may feel a stinging or heat sensation on the skin. The procedure is usually quick and well tolerated, and you can leave soon after it’s complete. Downtime is minimal – depending on the type of treatment, most people can return to their daily activities quickly after treatment.
You may experience mild redness and swelling but these will subside in three to five days. It’s advisable to stay out of the sun and apply sunscreen to prevent unwanted side effects.
How many sessions would I need?
Dr Kok: It depends on the diagnosis of the condition and the severity of the problem to be treated. Therefore, we advise undergoing a thorough assessment by your dermatologist. At Dermatology Collective Clinic & Surgery, our dermatologists will assess your skin and understand your skin needs. A treatment plan is then formulated, with treatment settings depending on your skin type and skin condition. There may be individuals who require a more gradual treatment plan and, therefore, more treatment sessions.
For stubborn pigmentation problems like sun spots or acne scar treatment, multiple sessions are usually required. While maintenance sessions may be needed to extend the treatment effects, it’s equally important to have a comprehensive skincare routine to augment the effects and prevent recurrence.
What skin tones is this laser treatment in Singapore suitable for?
Dr Kong: The settings can be adjusted depending on skin type, so it’s safe across a wide range of tones. Treatments are quick and downtime is minimal, which works well in our climate where people can’t afford long recovery periods. With proper sun protection and the right skincare, results are easy to maintain.

However, it’s not for people who’ve just tanned, have active infections or skin flare-ups. I also wouldn’t do it during pregnancy.
Final thoughts?
Dr Kok: Achieving your skincare goals requires a trusted healthcare professional who can partner with you on this journey, so consult with a trained doctor or dermatologist before undergoing any laser treatment in Singapore. Laser treatment is safe and effective; however, in order to achieve optimal results, a consistent skincare routine is important. Speak to a dermatologist, who can formulate a comprehensive skincare routine, before and after your laser treatment.
