Reusable masks that look and feel good!

14th April 2020 by Anthia Chng 2 Min Read

https://expatliving.sg/where-to-buy-face-masks-in-singapore-resuable-mask-surgical-mask/

Surgical face masks and paper ones are not eco-friendly. Consider using reusable face masks instead. Reusable cloth masks are washable and should last a long time. We look at the difference between the two from a safety point of view. If you’re looking to invest in a good one, CYC Made to Measure has rolled out a fab range on their site. Why not look stylish while you’re at it?

Surgical versus cloth

Both types of face masks are able to trap droplets, which is the main transmission route of the COVID-19 virus. But medical evidence states that surgical face masks are still more effective than cloth masks in protecting you from foreign particles.

Nonetheless, there has been recent evidence suggesting that reusable cotton face masks provide 50 to 60 percent of filtration efficiency. On top of that, a study done in 2013 found that something as basic as two layers of a cotton T-shirt is highly effective as a barrier against virus particles of various sizes. The answer is simple: cloth masks do provide some protection, and that’s still better than none.

Protect with style

CYC Made to Measure’s reusable cloth masks are made of an Egyptian cotton fabric to aid breathability. As the material is taken from leftover fabrics from high-quality shirts, you won’t be able to choose a colour. Think of it as getting a surprise! Because of this, wastage is reduced too, which is a big score on sustainability. The masks include a three-layered filter insert to provide added protection against foreign particles, but if you prefer an even finer filter, you can replace it with a surgical mask or another woven material instead. You should hand wash the mask and insert after each use. Soak it in hot water, and then wash it with laundry detergent. Replacement inserts are sold separately.

Young ones aren’t left out, either! There’s a kids’ size for those aged 10 and below, as well as a teens’ size for those between 11 and 14 years.

A cause to support

If you’re good with sewing and you want to make a difference in this time of crisis, here’s an initiative you can join! CYC Made to Measure is recruiting volunteers to sew cloth masks for migrant workers under a high risk of infection. You’ll be given the pre-cut fabric, elastic bands and clear instructions, including a step-by-step video guide.
