What’s in her wardrobe: Kara Bensley shares her style secrets

Ever walked past a woman who looks enviously chic at an event or on the street and wondered how she puts herself together so effortlessly? Yep – we hear you, which is why we track down women in Singapore with on-point style every month to tell us just how they do it, despite juggling multiple commitments. This month, we spoke to the founder of theWYLDSHOP.com Kara Bensley, who gives the low-down on her routine as a retail entrepreneur and thoughts on the fashion industry.

Working in a start-up, each day is different. Our showroom is open seven days a week by appointment only, and my schedule is built around that. We’re always on the hunt for new brands and local businesses to collaborate with, so there are always internal and external meetings and Skype calls on the agenda. There’s a range of tasks I manage too, spanning from admin, data analysis, content research, marketing and PR to stock management and showroom maintenance.

If I had to define it, I would say relaxed. I’m a strong believer that comfort is key. I have an eclectic taste in fashion, just like I do with music – I embrace and appreciate something if it resonates with me. I’ve always loved kaftans, be they short, long or something in-between. I don’t often wear fitted clothing, and I prefer oversized tees and tops.

I’m very conscious of the climate here in Singapore when I’m out and about. Even though it’s super-humid outdoors, it can be chilly indoors or if in a taxi. At the very least, I make sure I carry a scarf in my bag if I know I’ll be inside for an extended period of time. It also gives me a chance to layer!

It’s usually the print or the silhouette that draws me to a garment. I love any type of animal print, and black is always my go-to colour. I studied fashion design, so I have a deep appreciation of the industry and the effort it takes to create just one garment, from the innovative luxury designer brands that put the wheels in motion each season to the commercial brands that interpret their designs for the masses. What’s kept me in the business is my love for the people and the customers. I love seeing women (and men) happy in themselves when they put something on that makes them feel amazing. Thus, my attitude and belief has always been comfort equals confidence. I also believe you should have fun dressing up, as fashion should be an expression of who you are – that’s what we encourage at my company.

I miss my Aussie brands, which is partly why I created theWYLDshop.com. Somedays Lovin’ always has easy, relaxed silhouettes that suit my shape, as well as great rompers and kimonos. I love Evil Twin for their mad creative prints mixed with cool fabrics, and silhouettes that are edgy but wearable, like their T-shirt dresses.

Staple The Label does great basics for men and women, including women’s tops that can be worn with shorts or tucked into a long black skirt. Finally, I don’t go anywhere without a pair of my Le Specs Sunglasses and a good lipstick!
