Planning a day out with friends and family in Singapore and keen to do something different for a change? We’ve got an idea for a great outdoor activity: kayak fishing! As the name suggests, it combines the fun of paddling a kayak with the thrill and skill of trying to catch fish. Here’s why you should give it a shot.
#1 It’s fun for all levels
Kayak Fishing Fever is a company offering three exciting kayak fishing itineraries, covering different distances: The Playground (2-4 kilometres), Big Boat Small Boat (3-5 kilometres) and Island Hopper (7-10 kilometres). Instead of using regular kayak paddles, the company’s boats are Hobie kayaks, which are leg-powered – so get ready for some peddling!
If you’re a first-timer, The Playground is a good place to start. Lasting three to four hours, the tour involves a very manageable distance and is a great intro to the sport. You’ll be able to fish for bottom sea creatures such as grouper and snapper. For a bit more of a workout, opt for Big Boat Small Boat, which takes you past the ships sailing around Singapore’s coast. As you fish, you’ll enjoy views of the city. For the full experience, challenge yourself with the Island Hopper tour (four to five hours), bringing you from Sentosa to the Southern Islands. Enjoy fishing around some of Singapore’s richest reefs and paddling through currents. Fish that you’ll come across on this tour include mackerel and queen fish.
In addition, all equipment is provided by Kayak Fishing Fever. Just bring yourself, a hat and sunblock to protect you from the rays. There’ll also be toilets and shower facilities at the start and end points of the tour for you to wash up.
#2 Safety comes first
Each tour has a maximum of four people, with one dedicated guide helping you along the way. The guide is first-aid trained and a certified lifeguard, and lifejackets are provided for all. If you’re in a larger group, the team can arrange for more guides to accompany you. And don’t worry: the guide will teach anyone who hasn’t kayaked or fished before how to do both, to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable time!
#3 Kids will love it
If you’ve got adventurous little ones at home, they can join in the fun! The only thing to note is that any children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult in a tandem kayak for safety reasons.
#4 Tour times are flexible
Tours typically start at 7am in the morning, but if you have another timing in mind, the team will try their best to arrange it for you. Enjoying your day on the water too much? Your friendly guide will be happy to do extend your tour if there are no subsequent bookings.
#5 Best of all, it’s sustainable!
All fish caught during the tours are released back into the sea as part of the company’s catch-and-release practice. As a result, the marine life around Singapore’s reefs is sustained.
