Why a water filter is good for your home

18th June 2021 by Patricea Chow 3 Min Read

I used to buy plastic bottled water because it was convenient and I didn’t like the taste of tap water. But I switched to using a home water dispenser with filters when I learned about the environmental and potential health problems of drinking from plastic water bottles. Now, all my water for cooking or drinking is run through a water filtration system before I use it.

Besides improving the taste of drinking water, using Swisspro water filters helps the health of you and your family; plus, you also get to reduce your carbon footprint and save money. Find out more about these key benefits below.

#1 Chemical-free drinking water for the family

A study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that drinking from polycarbonate bottles increases the levels of bisphenol A (BPA) in urine. The study suggests that BPA could be released into water and other liquids that’s stored inside polycarbonate bottles. Long-term exposure to BPA has been shown to adversely affect the brain and prostate gland in infants and children. It’s also been linked with later cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

A water dispenser with filters helps remove BPA and other chemicals from drinking water.

#2 Filter the microplastics from your water

Microplastics are fragments of plastic that are smaller than 5mm in diameter. They enter our water and air ecosystems through a variety of sources. For example, they can come from plastic pellets, microbeads, microfibres from clothing and from the breakdown of larger plastic items such as water bottles, plastic bags and plastic cutlery.

Studies have shown that microplastics are present in bottled water. The contamination likely comes from the process of bottling and packaging the water in the plastic bottles.

What’s the impact of microplastics on human health? Research indicates that long-term ingestion can cause a variety of biological effects, including cellular damage, inflammatory immune reactions and disruption of hormone levels.

Standard water treatment facilities can’t remove all traces of microplastics in water. Using a water dispenser with filters helps to remove these traces.

#3 How using a water dispenser can save you money

Everyone deserves better quality water without having to pay high prices for it. A bottle of water costs $1 to $2.50, depending on the brand. Installing a water dispenser with filters in your kitchen works out at no more than $1 a day over the lifespan of the dispenser. If the water dispenser has an option for hot and cold water, that’s added convenience and more cost savings!

Which type of water dispenser with filters is best?

When buying a water dispenser in Singapore, try to get one that uses both an activated carbon filter and a ceramic filter. (The ceramic filter helps prevent bacterial recontamination, especially if the water filtration system hasn’t been used for several days.) Together, these filters remove chlorine and other chemicals, organic impurities, microplastics and odours from water. So your water comes out tasting and smelling more natural.

What’s more, both filters are biodegradable, which means they’re kinder to the environment. The ceramic filter can be cleaned easily and can last from three to five years with proper care.

In Singapore, you can get three-stage home filtration systems by Swisspro that are fitted with a prefilter, activated carbon and ceramic filters (starting from $1,099). These water filtration systems can be fitted under or above the sink.

For more convenience, a water dispenser for hot and cold water can be added to the water filtration system. The dispenser and water filters can be placed together under the sink. The set-up includes a LED display faucet for choosing between hot, cold or ambient water. They also have a range of countertop or floor standing water dispensers with water filters. These are convenient for anyone who is renting their apartment for shorter terms and considering changing locations.

All Swisspro’s water dispensers feature Swiss-made filtration technology that has been tested and certified by accreditation bodies. These dispensers have been installed in homes, offices, schools and hospitals around Singapore.

If you’re thinking about getting a Swisspro water dispenser with filters for safer, natural-tasting water at home, head to swisspro.sg to find out which is the best for your needs, and to get a no-obligation consultation.
