Many kids (and adults) don’t get enough vitamins, minerals, nutrients or antioxidants, even when they’re eating a balanced diet. A lot of the food we eat these days is low on these essentials that we need to function well. And, if kids are picky eaters, they’ll be getting even less of them. Here are four key areas where a kids’ multivitamin supplement with probiotics (and a tasty one at that!) could improve your child’s health and development.
#1 Digestive health
Our gut health plays a major role in digestion, immune functions and brain-gut signalling. It can impact everything from mood and mental health to energy levels and physical wellbeing. What’s more, maintaining a natural balance of “good” bacteria is key to a healthy digestive system.
So, ensuring that beneficial bacteria strains make it into our bodies is important; this can be achieved with probiotics (a combination of live “good” bacteria). Probiotics can be found in fermented foods such as yoghurt and kimchi, and in fermented drinks like kombucha. They can also be consumed in supplement form.
For many parents – myself included – it’s usually a lot easier to get probiotics into a child’s system with fruit-flavoured tablets than, say, gherkins or kombucha. If the multivitamin resembles candy in any way, my kids will surely take it!
High Q+ is a chewable kids’ vitamin supplement from Korea that’s enriched with the probiotic known as LAB (lactic acid bacteria). Not only does LAB introduce useful bacteria to the body, but it also helps with essential nutrient absorption and improved digestion.
So, while your little one is enjoying the sweet, fruity flavour (High Q+ comes in two flavours: strawberry and orange), you’ll be relieved to know that the probiotics are getting to work in those little tummies!
#2 Brain health
During pregnancy, women are usually advised to take prenatal supplements containing DHA; this omega-3 fatty acid is essential for brain development, especially during pregnancy and early childhood. In fact, research has shown that, when taken during the early childhood years, DHA can improve learning, memory and brain development in children.
But, because DHA is naturally produced only in small quantities by our bodies, it’s important to ensure that enough is taken in through dietary sources such as fish, or through supplements such as High Q+ kids’ vitamins.
#3 Eye health
The potential benefits of DHA don’t stop there. Research has shown that DHA can also help support eye health. And, with bright screens and a huge reliance on digital devices, many of us need all the support can get when it comes to protecting our vision – kids included.
Since many young ones don’t get enough of the nutrients needed to support optimal eye health, being able to give them DHA in a kids’ multivitamin can be a great bonus.
#4 Immune system
There are many vitamins and minerals essential to supporting a healthy immune system. Vitamins C, A, D, B6 and E are all infection-fighters; zinc, meanwhile, is an important mineral that plays a role in producing new immune system cells.
High Q+ contains all of these immunity boosters and antioxidants, plus folic acid and other multivitamins essential for skeletal and muscular growth, and general development.
High Q+ recommends that children aged four to six chew two tablets daily, while children aged seven and above chew three of the kids’ vitamins daily. Nursing mamas can take them, too!
