The straight to the point smartphone review

So Samsung has finally unseated Apple from global smartphone dominance, and adding insult to the iPhone injury is Blackberry, which has finally produced a phone that’s nibbling at market share. EX testers put four market-leading mobiles through the life test…

Samsung Galaxy Note II*
– You’re happy to use Android
– You like big screens
– You want all your notifications in one place (Facebook, email, Twitter, SMS and calls)
– You like being able to handwrite notes on the screen
– You like listening to the radio

Our tester says: “The notification centre is excellent, and although the bigger screen makes you feel like an 80s throwback when you’re on the phone, it’s actually really, really good for web browsing and reading/writing longer emails.”

Nokia Lumia
– You’re a Windows user
– You like seeing all notifications (email, SMS, calls) from a contact in one place
– You like a phone with a bit more body colour than usual (the Lumia comes in snazzy red, yellow and other tones)

Our tester says: “The iPhone is ubiquitous so there’s never a problem finding somewhere to charge it and the app store has everything you could want but notifications aren’t really synced in one convenient place.”

Apple iPhone 5
– Your house is full of Apple products
– You want a fast phone
– You use iCloud
– You’re not too worried about battery longevity
You really like downloading apps

Our tester says: “The iPhone is ubiquitous so there’s never a problem finding somewhere to charge it and the app store has everything you could want, but notifications aren’t really synced in one convenient place.”

Blackberry Z10
– All your contacts are on BBM
– You write most of your emails on your hand-held device
– You like all your notifications in one place
– You’re not really into downloading lots of apps
– You want the sharpest display out there

Our tester says: “It takes a little bit of time to get used to the finger navigation on this but once you’ve got it down you’re away, and the predictive writing system makes bashing out an email really speedy.”

*Unfortunately the new Samsung Galaxy S4 didn’t arrive in time for our reviewers to put it through its paces
