The lowdown on the Year of the Rabbit

Chinese metaphysicians believe that everything in the universe is governed by the “law of exchange of the five elements” – metal, water, wood, fire and earth. Each of these elements has two polarities, yin and yang, so in any given year, the related element can be either yin (feminine) or yang (masculine).

That’s why 2011 is not just the Year of the Rabbit; it’s the Year of the Metal Rabbit. What’s more, it’s the year of the Yin Metal Rabbit.

Chinese New Year falls on 3 February 2011, and the year of the Yin Metal Rabbit will begin on 4 February at 12.33pm. This is the official changeover from winter to spring, according to the Solar Calendar.

The Year of the Rabbit is traditionally associated with the home and family. It is also associated with artistic pursuits, diplomacy and keeping the peace. To fully benefit from this year, patience will be your best tool.

The year 2010 was the Year of the Yang Metal Tiger, dominated by masculine energy. But 2011, the Year of the Yin Metal Rabbit, is dominated by feminine energy. The elements that dominate the year ahead are metal and wood.

Singapore should have a good year again, but people need to moderate their expectations and be more cautious in the way they run their businesses and make investments. Otherwise, they are likely to be disappointed. Being a yin year, 2011 will be slower, and profits may take a longer time to materialise. Much of our success of 2011 will depend on the outcome of global events.

Here’s wishing everyone a blessed and prosperous 2011!
