The art of upholstery in Singapore: BODE’s got all-things fabric covered

Mention director’s or deck chairs in Singapore and the chances are that someone will point you in the direction of BODE – and rightly so.

But what we’re here to do, is to let you in on a fabulous inside tip. It’s the interior store’s huge selection of contemporary fabrics, furnishings, wallpapers, leathers and trims that’s really got the island’s leading interior designers and architects knocking at their door. Because no one in Singapore pulls off upholstery quite like BODE.

Founded in 2008 by fabric fanatic Jenny Lewis, BODE stocks handpicked brands not otherwise available this side of Asia. Think Timorous Beasties and Designs of the Time, Florence Broadhurst and Decortex Firenze, plus Neisha Crosland and Ian Sanderson.

Jenny’s just added two lush new brands to their repertoire, too. You’ll no doubt have seen Liberty Arts Fabrics‘ signature style of detailed patterns and vivid colour in various interiors glossies, and James Malone Fabrics’ whimsical, geometric designs that make us want to reupholster everything in sight!

While we’re on the subject of upholstery, you’ll want to check out New Zealand brand Hemptech’s natural fabrics when you’re visiting BODE’s glorious showroom on Eng Neo Avenue (psst, they’re relocating to Tan Boon Liat in April). Hemptech’s cool linen blends in earthy shades are perfect for Singapore’s humid climate. They soften with age and are washable too, which just gave them an extra credit by mums!

But the team over at BODE won’t just flog you the fabric and wallpaper and send you on your way. They can either recommend craftspeople in Singapore and beyond, or you can rope them in to managing your cushion-making, curtain-sewing, furniture-design, and upholstery (or re-upholstery) project.

You can also commission the store to make bean bags, poofs, ottomans and cubes (or Bode Bags, as they call them) in your choice of design, and their fabric-covered Books of BODE make excellent gifts.

Now, back to those famous deck chairs and director’s chairs! You’d have to have some serious willpower to visit BODE’s showroom and not come away with at least one tucked under your arm. The light-toned teak frames in gorgeous designs are perfect for the patio or poolside. Have yours draped in cotton canvas from the Les Toiles du Soleil weavers in the French Pyrenees (no less!) or, be practical, and plump for sun-resistant Sunbrella outdoor acrylic.

BODE’ll be moving its showroom to interiors favourite Tan Boon Liat in April. In the meantime, call or email the team to schedule an appointment to cast your eye over their trendy textiles at their current Eng Neo Avenue address.
