Fittingly, on a stay-over in glitzy Dubai after covering the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the brief loan of an Aston Martin Vanquish kept me out in front in the ‘look-at-me’ stakes.
In a vibrant city, where even the police patrol in Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches, a Vanquish – as displayed at the UAE’s international motor show that week – was my eye-popper.
The company has launched a major bid for business in the region and mega-spy James Bond’s Aston Martin is certainly licensed to vanquish.
Little wonder. It looks special. It feels special. And it IS special. And for just under $1.1m, so it should be.
Even in the welter of supercars posing outside my hotel, the beachside Royal Mirage with its endless parade of international celebrities, the Aston stood as a singularly handsome presence.
It was the same story on my outings to five-star venues; the shameless scramble among car-park attendants to look after my transport and ensure it was prominently stationed was a real fun factor.
It would be right at home in the UK’s Premier League footballer-land and a real treasure to behold outside Chez Macauley. Alas, I had to leave it in Dubai.
By then I was hooked, as well as confident that this updated beauty will provide a positive challenge to the supercar opposition – the likes of the Mercedes SLS AMG and, say, Ferrari’s F12.
My well-overdue lottery win will certainly be spent on this example of styling at its finest, allied to performance levels and an absolute masterpiece of an interior that exudes space, clever thinking and brilliant touch-sensitive buttons on a re-thought central console.
In the hurly-burly of the frantic action between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, along the straight coastal highway where spoilt boy racers and their immensely wealthy dads abound in wild aggression, the Vanquish offered a sturdily safe presence and a pace to dump my chasers.
Trophy Wife wasn’t too interested in driving it – she just wanted to be seen climbing leggily and cocktail-dressedly from it outside the ultra-posh restaurants Dubai has in abundance.
And it was my pleasure to be her chauffeur in a real show-off car that is going places…fast. Very fast.
